Monaco Circuit - Which is faster?

Interesting question which came into my head during the GP Monaco at the weekend:

What would be faster around the Monaco GP Circuit, a WRC Rally car.... or a F1 car?

Im tempted to say the WRC car because of all the corners, but their are a few sections where the F1 car would be doing 190+MPH which would wipe alot of it out.

(or is it a stupid question? :D)

B0DSKI 30 May 2007 12:30 PM

Still think the F1 car would walk it. Like you say the speed a F1 car would reach through the tunnel, along the main straight and up the hill would destroy the WRC car, be an interesting race though :thumb:

Simes777 30 May 2007 12:34 PM

You could always cover the tarmac in gravel / mud / snow just to make it interesting :D

marmski 30 May 2007 12:37 PM

I would like to see Alonso vs: Loeb in their respective cars around the closed circuit and see who could set the fastest lap.

Its one of those questions that i cant get out of my head though! :p

nik52wrx 30 May 2007 12:43 PM

The F1 car would hammer a WRC car even through the corners.

Daft Lad 30 May 2007 12:49 PM

Have to agree, surely the F1 car would be faster? I know which one I'd rather watch though ;)

what would scooby do 30 May 2007 12:53 PM

What about in torrential rain ?

You sure?

When the drivers were driving around the tighter sections i couldnt help think of how much faster WRC cars seem to take similar corners on looser tracks.

Maybe it would hammer it... im just not sure.

Average speed of an F1 car around Monaco is about 99MPH... could a WRC car match that?

Fantom 30 May 2007 01:10 PM

Theres no way a WRC car could challenge an F1 car on that circuit!

stilover 30 May 2007 01:11 PM

The only time a WRC car could be faster than an F1 car around Monaco would be in the tight hairpins. Apart from that the F1 car would just blitz the WRC........... even in the wet.

The WRC car would get the better traction out of the slow corners thanks to 4WD, but once the F1 car got going (assuming no traction control) then it wouold rip past the WRC car on the first straight.

Paul3446 30 May 2007 01:14 PM

An F1 car would be fastest everywhere, no exceptions!

Ste1711 30 May 2007 01:19 PM

It's called F1 for a reason, it's the best and fastest car racing that there is. F1 all the way! Closely followed by me!!!

Agreed

Paul3446 30 May 2007 01:29 PM

Rally car = 300 bhp / 1230 KG
F1 car = 950 BHP / 600 KG

I can't believe anyone thinks a Rally car would be quicker out of corners coz it's got more grip? Have you seen the size of F1 tyres? :wonder:

wall 30 May 2007 01:34 PM

F1 would be faster everywhere, including slow corners. WRC car would even be slower in the tightest hairpins with heavy rain: even if it could put down all its power early whilst the F1 only 30%, that 30% would still be more, and with more tire grip and more aero grip giving an overall faster cornering speed to begin with. F1 cars look slow when you watch the GP, as it's all so clean (lines etc) compared to WRC and even TC, however on smooth tarmac they are by far the fastest thing racing, including " in the twisties ;) ".

Yeah but the F1 would aqua plane in the wet.

:D

The bigger question is an F1 car or a Nova 1.3 Spin??

miff13 30 May 2007 01:40 PM

Top Gear did this a few years ago (not round Monaco), the rally car was quick but the F1 car was in a different league.

YouTube - road car vs rally car vs f1

dmc1980 30 May 2007 01:40 PM

the f1 car without a doubt, as said, it would be gone by the first corner

i havent seen them in their respective cars, but i did see drivers including loeb etc at the race of champions in paris at the end of last year, impressive stuff!

jasonius 30 May 2007 01:50 PM

I can only assume the OP and those who think a WRC car would have a 'chance' have never seen an F1 car going around corners in the flesh..:lol1:

On TV you get about a 10th of the sensation of speed, even the head on shots of them changing direction through the Nouvelle chicane and Swimming pool complex is severely muted compared to the reality.

No other type of car would come close..!

I saw this too... which is probably part of the reason for my question.

Fair enough though... just thought the tight nature of Monaco might give the WRC car a chance.

SPEN555 30 May 2007 02:01 PM

Would an F1 car be quicker than WRC round a super special stage :D Now that would be funny!

IMHO an F1 would hammer a WRC round monaco, anyway just try in your Playstation and find out :D

gpssti4 30 May 2007 02:06 PM

I don't think that even RCM's 'Gobstopper' would stand a chance and that would easily beat a WRC car - given that it could run whatever it wanted!

Paul3446 30 May 2007 02:16 PM

I remember seeing an F1 car against a 500cc gp bike at Donington, from a rolling 30 mph start.

They were pretty even until about 100mph when the F1 car just started to edge ahead, funny thing was when they braked at Redgate the car was about 100 yards later than the bike!

B0DSKI 30 May 2007 02:25 PM

Don't u just love the way McRae drifted the focus on the wet Tarmac :notworthy

Dracoro 30 May 2007 02:56 PM

That top gear was in the wet too! The record (schumacher) for s'tone is 1.18 so that time in the vid was 15 seconds slower.

F1 car would MULLER a WRC car round monaco (and every other F1 circuit), even in the slowest corners, can't believe anyone would still question it.

On tarmac, you need tyre grip so even in the wet the WRC would be that much slower than it would be in the dry.

Alonso got a 1.15 at monaco last weekend, I think a WRC car would be lucky to get anywhere near 1:30, probably somewhere between 1:40/1:50.

There is a televisual illusion going on though as well, through slow corners F1 cars can "look" slow due to moving cameras, perspective etc. WRC always look fast as there's trees right by the track so you get a good perspective of speed.

Weren't Top Gear lOOking for new show ideas?!? :D

As much as i love WRC and can't believe i watched 3hrs of F1 on sunday, i also still think the F1 would have it.

I also wanna see this. As well as other "close" circuits. Then maybe F1 down the forest stages of Wales :lol1:

To give some indication of how fast an F1 car is, take into account that the safety car is an CLK63 AMG merc absolutely stuffed to the tits. The driver of said car has been doing the job for 30 years.

In a recent interview he said that when he is out on track in a safety car situation, he is driving the car at 99% of its limits (he keeps 1% in "reserve" because sometimes the F1 drivers get inpatient and hurry him along). The car can do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155mph, which he hits at some tracks, like silverstone.

v8voodoo 30 May 2007 04:25 PM

Horses for courses really.

Do'nt suppose one of those "super fast" Formula ~One cars would fare too well compared to the likes of this: YouTube - Top Fuel double 4sec pass Then again, the Fueller doesn't do corners.. lol!
