Who are these people that drive at a constant 40-45mph, in all conditions, on all roads regardless of speed limit?

A longish stretch of road near me has been re-classified from a 40 to 30 limit. Now I frequently get tailgated or overtaken along this bit, and then when it changes to NSL, I catch them up, they're doing 40-45mph. Of course I then overtake, if it's safe to do so. Sometimes they flash me when I overtake - presumably because they think I'm driving too fast. Derrrr.

There's even one bit with one of those electronic 'slow down' signs. It's just before a sharp left bend, immediately after which there is a cross roads. You can't see until you rounded the bend - so if there's a car stopped waiting to turn right.... I don't know whether to laugh or cry as I ease off to go round this bend and see the headlights of the car behind disappear below my rear window.

I bet they think they're being really safe and 'oh I never speed, not like those hooligans that overtake me when I'm already doing 45 in that 60 limit'.

T055ers!!!!

Rant over.
Tim

Tell me about, loads of emm round here. There's one bit where every body speeds, except me, I religously stick to 30 cos the cops sit in a car park...round a corner and behind a wall, you know where they can be clearly seen! In fact a mate has been stopped there twice and acquired six points for it,ayway, my point is you get folk sat an inch off your bumper looking to get past then you get to the glf sign and they're nowhere to be seen, what's it all about?

Couldn't agree more.
People (especially taxis) do 40-50mph all the time and drive right up my arse when I do 30. Really pi$$3s me off!
As for flashing when you overtake them, this happens a lot to me. Lots of people seem to have a problem with being overtaken; this mentality can usually be observed in drivers of poverty-spec 3 series BMWs.
What is more anoying is when people make it hard, or impossible to overtake. E.g. a certain Calibra on a narrow country lane bimbling along in front of me at about 15-20mph admiring the countryside. It was impossible to get past as the road was so narrow, but every time we reached a passing point did she pull over... did she sh!t£.

Yep same old story I am afraid, told thousands of times before - these drivers won't change and are more likely (not all of them I hasten to add) to be of the older generation

simes 21 December 2001 10:45 PM

Bane of my life, my theory is it's the minimum speed most cars will do in 5th gear.

However, when you say all roads, that is not true, they also do 85 on motorways 3 feet behind someone else's ar5e

JamieR 21 December 2001 11:39 PM

It comes down to not reading and adapting to the environment, either through lack of concentration, ability or experience. I reckon that a significant proportion of drivers just travel at a speed roughly proportional to how much of a rush they are in. Period.

Really drives me mad. I've only seen an Impreza doing it once, and he was right up my a%se. Fool.

...And we wonder why so many "uneducated" people believe simply that "speed" kills? Once more for the record, eh?

INAPPROPRIATE Speed Kills. Always be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.

shoot the fekers and cut their nuts off :D Bunch of politiciants if you ask me

carl 22 December 2001 09:56 AM

In Tom Topper's "Very Advanced Driving" he refers to them as 'my speeders', i.e. they drive all the time at 'their speed' and think they must be safe. Particularly annoying when they drive at a speed the Scoob won't do in 5th (i.e. anything less than 45).

SD 22 December 2001 10:50 AM

I have a theory on this. I now take the 'twisty' way back from work ;) and the roads go from NSL to 40, then to 30 and another road goes straight from NSL to 30 as it enters the village I live in. I always always always get stuck behind the '45 mph everywhere' brigade in the NSL and then get left behind in the 30 limit.

I genuinely think that it's because they don't know what the speed limit in the NSL is. (I mean, that's really confusing to see the same white circle/black line sign everyday and soooooo difficult to look it up in the highway friggin' code!). So they drive along at a 'comfortable', not going to raise the pulse above sleep level, speed and then just continue on at the same speed through the 30 because they 'can' (ie there's no sharp corners to slow them down. They drive according to the road directly, and not according to hazards, if you see what I mean). The fact that it's inappropiate speed doesn't enter their heads.

Morons.

The only justice is that the police have got wise to this of-late and now sometimes sit a few hundred yards within the 30 with a hair-dryer. :):):) I'm sending my local police force a camouflage suit for chrimbo to make them even more inconspicuous to said 'Morons'. ;)

Simon.

Alas 22 December 2001 10:57 AM

Two incidents in last 7 days.
Both in the 30mph village I pass through on way to work. Police often about so always go at 30.
7am the other morning a CO-OP artic overtakes me going outside two central reservations and then cuting back in.
This morning a Passat passes me in the 30 waving wildly at me for going at 30mph and when reaching the GLF increases speed to 45!!
Suffice to say (and I know I should'nt do it) I just about blew him off the road with the slipstream.
Arrrrrgh

Anthony King 22 December 2001 01:21 PM

I had one of these jokers last week driving literally 5 feet from my bumper at 85mph along the motorway. I tried flashing the brake lights to no avail and only got them to fall back to a reasonable distance when I turned the hazard lights on. They were not evan trying to overtake me as they simply moved into the slow lane and sat there doing around 60mph.

My other favourite moan is people who drive to a speed limit regardless of the local conditions. The fact that there may be double parked cars and kids leaving school and wet driving conditions doesn't seem to register with them.

Yes, and I also love the people that stick to 45mph in a large convoy of cars bumper to bumper on lovely sunny dry days in a national speed limit area.

Ps. Carl - I think you're showing your age mentioning Tom Topper!

carl 22 December 2001 01:28 PM

Anthony -- I don't think so. I bought a copy in 1991 when I was 18 :D

MichelleWRX1994 22 December 2001 02:29 PM

Bunch of politiciants if you ask me
Can you just remind me what that word means??? I seem to have forgotten ;)

Hey we could have a category in the Scoobynet awards about the most posted about topic, this has GOT to be one of them :D

NBW 22 December 2001 03:13 PM

Michelle,

I don't think that has much bearing on fast bloke's argument...

'shoot the fekers and cut their balls off' - LOL

MichelleWRX1994 22 December 2001 03:28 PM

OH no I agree with that bit, but you may struggle if said *politiciant* ;) is female :D

NBW 22 December 2001 03:30 PM

Oh, almost forgot, was washing cars earlier, and stood out in the road rinsing wife's with my new pressure washer (birthday pressie).

The washer makes a fair bit of noise, and me' bobble hat was a bit over me' ears and so I didn't hear a car coming along the road. So, he had to slow down to, oh, about 15mph, before I saw him and got out of the road sharpish. As soon as I'm gone he floors it and hits may be 40-45 up the road.

Now my street is quite narrow, with cars parked on the pavement each side, which gives lots of gaps for kids, dogs or cats (we have 2) to run out from. Needless to say the speed 'limit' is 30, but in my opinion 15-20 is more appropriate.

What makes (presumably) reasonably intelligent people suspend all judgement when they get behind the wheel of their car?

NBW 22 December 2001 03:32 PM

Michelle,

I wasn't going to ask fast bloke what happen's if it's a woman, I've only just had me lunch!

Tim

MichelleWRX1994 22 December 2001 03:33 PM

Call yourself a man eh ;) :p

NBW 22 December 2001 04:56 PM

Or a mouse?

Eeek eeek

MrData 22 December 2001 05:01 PM

I agree.

These Tw4ts seem to be wherever I go.

Normally you'd be able to blast past them as you come out of town, but given that they've been doing 15mpg faster, they're already too far up the road before the next bend comes along.

I've always been curious what explanation one of these turkeys could have for driving the way they do. Other than the fact that they have got sh!t for brains.

Cheers
Kurt

Or a mouse?

Eeek eeek
Umm whatever turns you on ;) LOL

NBW 22 December 2001 05:42 PM

Whoops, there goes another serious thread.......

MichelleWRX1994 22 December 2001 05:48 PM

I assure you it was not intentional ;)

NBW 22 December 2001 06:07 PM

Yeah, right!

MichelleWRX1994 22 December 2001 07:04 PM

*Honestly* ;)

*Innocent expression* ;)

ChrisB 22 December 2001 08:27 PM

Getting back on topic... ;)

I always seem to find these Muppets operating in groups of three or more. As they are all such safe drivers, they can safely travel in a group with a gap of 2ft between cars.

Hence, overtaking becomes an all-or-nothing move. Even going past at full tilt in 2nd, I can still hear them tutting at me.

We've already got some self-appointed road safety do-gooders called Brake, I'm setting up Speed. Anyone else want to join?

Anthony King 22 December 2001 08:35 PM

Carl - Ok so you're mature beyond your years.

carl 22 December 2001 08:42 PM
