Legacy overheating issues
Hi guys,
I have a Subaru Legacy 1999 2.5 awd b4 4cam which causing me a rather large headache. The problem is it is drastically overheating, I thought that the head gaskets had gone as it was warmer than an aussie cookout. :wonder: I checked the coolant and it was not even visable, I discovered a hole in the rad which has now been sealed. However, I have realised that both fans are cutting in and out sporadically when you turn the climate control on/off or fiddle with the settings Ie turning the ac on and off. :cuckoo: Is this an electrical fault? Do I need to change the gaskets anyway? Is it the fan switch or ac relays? Basically I am at a lost cause and any info would be a god send. Thanks and take care, Smokey. |
it is normal for the fans to come on when the air con is switched on.
if the water temp is now fine and the water level is remaining just below full on the header tank and now coming out of the expansion tank then you have got away with it. Simon |
Thanks Simon,
I didnt know that it was normal for these fans to kick in with the ac, that relieves some of my confusion, however, if I drive without the climate control unit on then the car sears into rather high temperatures, I tend to turn it off when there is no need to have it on, I guess I have not been using it that much over the last month or so and I am only noticing temperature issues now? Thanks for the speedy response btw Smokey |
Most cars with A/C have an auxillary fan that kicks in when the A/C is on..

if it is still overheating then I would suspect head gaskets have failed due to the lack of water in the system when the rad went.
Get a test done on the coolant for hydrocarbons.. most garages can do it which will confirm head gasket problem. Also check the water level Simon |
check the stat as well. When my rad went, I found out my stat had gone also (thats on an impreza though so may not apply to a legacy)
Also possible air lock |
thanks
u dudes r a grate help i have just checked the coolant and taken it for a thrash and whith the a/c off both fans r cutting in and it is not getting over the middle of the temp gauge. the coolant looks at the right level too.
