And how do I start? Is it possible over the internet? At work when I do a search it is all American. Can anyone help?

Cheers

Usually best to start with your parents :D

Seriously, for starters take a look at:

www.genuki.org.uk
www.ukgenealogy.co.uk

Made a half-hearted start a couple of years ago, but other priorities took over. First few generations will be easy, gets progressively more difficult depending on how far back you want to go. Don't believe you will be able to do it totally online, at some point your have to start ploughing through parish records etc.

You could try the mormons as well - they keep a good history...

Do the mormons keep ahistory for everyone or just mormons?

Scrappy2 07 January 2002 12:38 PM

As far as I know, Mormons keep track of everybody...

Carl - I bet they do it so that they can figure out where to call for people who don't slam the door ;)

Everyone it seems (don't know why). Try www.familysearch.com. Also the 1901 UK Census is now online at www.census.pro.gov.uk but I doubt if you'll get it to work.

My dad has been doing our family tree for about 10 years now and is back to the early 1700's fairly completely. But he's retired and spends most of his time doing it. Be prepared to travel all over the place to look at records in parish churches etc.

EDIT: To start, talk to all the oldest members of your family, don't forget any great aunts/uncles etc that you may have forgotten about.
