Golf GTI Mk2 engine swaps?

Thinking about getting a cheap 'un and eventually tracking it but does anyone know where you can get an engine transplant? Which engines are reccommended and how much is the full job likely to set me back?

I'm initially thinking of a 1.8T with a Jabba/Revo remap or even a TDI lump for a bit of a giggle.

1.8T, VR6 are both a (relatively) easy fit.

fair few Golf 's out there with Ibiza Cupra (1.8vt) lumps in or even VR6's transplanted so yep, its relatively easy to shoe-horn them in.... :)

1.8 t, A bit lighter and more tunable for a given amount of money, plus hot hatches should be 4 cylinder, not 6.

think of the fun to be had with a VR6 lump in there, though ;)

I know a guy with a Mk2 Golf with a VR6 in it - it doesn't hang around thats for sure.

VR6 lumps are meant to add too much weight up front and ruin the handling. A 18T would be better but personally I'd go for a rebuilt/uprated G-Lader and keep the modifications 'period'.
