MY99 - What turbo?

Can someone tell me what turbo would be fitted on a MY99 STi Type R V Ltd and also an MY99 STi Wagon?

I believe the Type R has the VF28 but I am not sure what the wagon would have, VF24?

TIA

vf24 and vf28 are the same turbo, just with different actuators IIRC?

Interesting if the Wagon does have the same unit essentially as the boost comes on after 4000 in the Type R but the wagon has spooled up about 3250 ish. The main difference between the 2 cars is the Type R has a full scoobysport decat system whereas the Wagon has the standard cats and STi system.

I dont really understand what can effect the spool up rpm etc though, maybe someone can explain...

VF28 is standard fit on MY99 STI Wagon

Thats interesting, I have the MY99 STi Type R and my wife now has an MY99 STi Wagon (more practical for the baby)

What would cause the spool up on the Wagon to be earlier than the Type R? :wonder:

One day I will fully understand how the turbo is controlled, I thought it was all down to intake manifold pressure (or vacuum controlling the actuator).

Type R possibly has an intercooler leak, or an exhaust leak before the turbo.. 4000rpm is late for a VF28..

:eek2:

Hmm... I will take a look but not really sure how I could check for a leaking up pipe or IC. The Type R is due a service in a week or so, so I will ask Len at Subaru 4 You.

Car still makes full boost (1bar) but I guess the actuator allows some exhaust bypass to prevent overboost...

Any pointers in the mean time?

Rob (worried now)

assuming it has the standard intercooler then check the pipework to the turbo and under the intercooler and check the intercooler to throttle body pipe is on correctly.. sometimes pops off underneath and looks on from the top.

Exhaust leak you should hear or see black marks on joins etc..

It could be a weak actuator too.

Len is a top chap and will sort it now doubt
