wireless network help

Morning all,

Ok - my router is now working. Yay. My wireless network card is installed in the laptop.

Laptop currently sitting next to the router, I get 100% signal strengh, but, no internet access.

My linksys wireless g tells me it can see the acess point but cannot see the internet. If i check for networks and click on mine again I briefly get a connection to the internet.

I can connect t the internet from the PC (ethernet) so I know it's not the router.

I'm stuck, I can't figure out what would prevent the laptop seeing the internet. I've tried switching off firewalls. I noticed another network on the same channel so I've changed that ... nothing seems to work.

should say it's a linksys gateway and adapter

if you are using wireless security turn it off for testing purposes, can you ping websites on the wireless connection when connected?

my first test would be to ping the router to test the wireless, see if there are any packet loss.

If it works ping a web site, if not by URL then by IP, if it works IP you might have firewall issue on the PC or the router.

IF the ping to the router fails, you know your not getting a wireless connection. As said above turn off security and rename network, try again, if it works it might be a security issue, passphase wrong or encryption level not matching, although they do tend to auto configure.

If its a Cable modem, turn it off at the wall, turn the router off, turn the modem on first, the the router and try again, the modem locks to the MAC of the PC and thus wont work with a router until rebooted!

another point, wireless routers are not access points, access points are like having a cable on through the air, the signal passes through, a router assigns an IP and controls the connection.

:luxhello: yes mate, depends on make and model, but the little bit on laptop work I've done, its probably best to get a prof to do it... I only changed the keyboard and that was difficult enough.
