Does anybody know which model turbo is fitted on a standard my96 ? I've read different things, like IHI and Mitsubishi. Could well be that they fitted two different models during this year.

There was only one fitted to 96 cars, its a Mitsy TD05

What's the best upgrade Turbo for this MY?

Cheers

...I've heard that the TD05 is a nice turbo...get the car mapped first, then see if you want even more oompfh. ;)

Link or Unichip is the way to go... (I love the Link :D - makes me smile every day).

Tnx Pete. Could have asked Leon the same question :-))
The TD05L is a very nice turbo. It's bigger than later my's and you can easyly get 280pk and 350Nm out of it with another chip.
I even heard that this one is bigger than the IHI VF23, but that one is more suffisticated (better bearings (is this the right word) and a high temp. coating).

Hi All!

The turbo on an MY96 should be an MHI TD05H, not the TD05L. It's a sleeve bearing turbo, which makes it a lot tougher than the IHI turbos, at the cost of spool up speed...

The compressor map for the -05H is quite impressive, it will flow a LOT of air, it's just a bit choked by the 90 degree entry. This can be removed and replaced with a straight entry, making the TD05H a formidable little unit, surpassing both the VF23 and the infamous VF22. Once the entry has been sorted and a decent filter and exhaust are fitted, it will work really rather well. The only trouble is that it requires a replacement intake manifold to get the air pipe underneath it to the front of the car. Been there, done that....

Hope this helps,

Pat.

Pat,

Where can you get such a pipe to improve the gasflow to the turbo?
Is that what an uppipe is?

The L and the H designations are the entry path into the turbo.

The H turbos are front fed, the L turbos are top fed through a 90 degree bend.

To change to the H, you need to use a later spec inlet manifold, ideally a 97/98 as this uses the same ISC set up, the later water rail and fuel rails. I have heard of people jacking the inlet up on spacers, but suspect the water rail would still foul the inlet pipe.

Use the 97/98 inlet pipe too.

Cheers Pete for that :)
