Cylinder block - how do I split it?
 

Hi all,

I am currently trying to get my crank out of my 96 Type RA as a result of big ends failing. I am upto the stage of splitting the block.

My problem is my workshop manual suggests I need to remove some access caps and remove the pins connecting the con rods to the pistons and remove the pistons out of the blocks first. 1) I don't have the special tool, 2) my crank won't turn to get the pistons aligned with the access holes.

Has anyone done this recently? I'm not the first person to have the crank sieze, so what's the other way? Can I just split it anyway and take the block off over the pistons? It implies they only come out one way?

If you know the answer to this, you can probably tell me if I definately need the extraction tool for putting it back as well.

You need a 14mm Alley Key to remove the Blanking Plugs to remove the Gedgeon Pin circlips.
Dont worry too much if the crank is siezed and you cant turn it over to get the Gudgeon Pins out :-
Remove the oil pump,sump,pick-up pipe and windage tray.
Under the windage tray is a M6 bolt on the Internal Coolant Transfer - remove it.
On the back of the engine there is a M8 bolt through the crankcase - remove it.
Remove the other 6 M8 bolts on the crankcase.
Remove the 10 main crankcase bolts ( 4 on Left hand side, 6 on right hand side)
Gently prise the two halfs of the crankcase apart slightly without damaing the mating surfaces, until the crank frees up enough for you to turn it to remove the Gudgeon Pins from the Pistons. I use a long drift made from 6mm diameter Silver Steel to tap the Gudgeon Pins out. No real Special tools needed to strip or build back up.
You can now seperate the two halfs and see the damage.
