Road risk cover cancelled when insured on chassis no

Just been going through my insurance docs from A-Plan for my newly imported car. It's currently insured on the chassis number yet the documentation states that 'road risk' cover is not included before they are given a registration number.

Can someone clarify what 'road risk' actually means? Does a lack of it mean I'm not even covered third party on the road? (Needed to drive to MOT.) I didn't know you could get a certificate of motor insurance that doesn't satisfy minimum legal levels of insurance.

It means your not covered for driving on the road, you can get policies that exclude this - such as laid up policies - so your covered for theft and AD
but no road risk cover.

Seems a little harsh as some companys like NU will give yo a limited amount of time to get the vehicle registered.

Since new regs came into force re MID many insurers have tighted up procedures regarding unregistered cars.

Thanks, as I thought - does seem harsh.

A bit annoying as I had told A-Plan on the phone, "Oh, I'll need to drive it for its first MOT so can you insure it on the chassis number." They said "Fine, no problems - we do that a lot."

I'll call them tomorrow to clarify - but hopefully this will serve as a word of warning to anyone insuring an unregistered import with A-Plan who needs to drive it to an MOT.
