The wife's car is an x-trail 2.2 diesel. The mpg is piss poor, even compared to her old x-trail diesel.

Anyomne know of cheap chips to improve the economy ?

Surely if you have had one before and the mpg on the latest is noticeably worse,the first port of call should be a diagnostic check to make sure all is ok,especially if it is under warranty?

I have just ordered myself an X-Trail diesel which arrives next month - I was planning on speaking to these people

Sticking my oar in for the moment, as diesels run infintely lean; chipping usually involves injecting more fuel for a given airflow and running more boost. More fuel+boost; less economy, not the reverse.

So, based on usual chipping practices I don't think chipping it will cure the problem, unless its already injecting too much fuel or running too much boost, and one pays extra for a custom remap specfic to the particular individual car (not the model) that addresses the issue (highly doubtful if its a off-the-shelf chip or piggy back box).

If its black smoking when flooring it - especially when the turbo spins up, its a sure sign somethings not right with it. Where its either pushing in too much fuel, clogged inlet or injectors not atomising correctly (squirting instead of spraying).

Although maybe the later models run more boost to gain higher power figures, if that is the case, then maybe a different driving style is needed to compensate. If one wants real economy, it should be driven in a way that doesn't allow the turbo to spin up. Mind try telling a woman that - something I keep telling my other half everytime she takes her diesel past 2500rpm in 3rd when everything could all be done at 1500rpm in 5th; I've given up LOL ).

parents primera 2.2dci gives crap mpg also, 34-35 maybe hitting 40 on a 70mph motorway cruise.

dealers can't find any problem and reading about on the web it seems a common thing with them.

A modern diesel, albeit, in a hatch/saloon platform should give reasonable economy (45mpg+) unless used for short distances only or with a lead foot.

Wonder if there's a cat and or diesel particulates filter involved. Also wonder if the EGR can be reduced or blocked off :D
