How to get 400ish bhp??

Hi,

First post on here!

At the moment I have a EVO 8 Sitting at around 400bhp/400torque.

Getting a bit fed up with the EVO and have looked at buying a Scooby again.

Have been looking at a 2003 WRX what mods would I require to reach 400bhp? and what is likley to cost??

From a WRX?

A lot!! Not economical!

From an Uk STi,

Still quite a bit, but you wouldn't have to worry about pistons, rods and the gearbox etc...

From a JDM STi.

Not so much.

I'd speak to someone like David at APi for advice.

So with the wrx I would need to replace rods and pistons etc?? So what the max you can get from a wrx??

I forgot the sti had forged rods and pistons. So what kinda mods would I need??

At the mo I would have around 2-3 grand to play with:thumb:

btt for some help:luxhello:

Pete 13 April 2007 04:32 PM

I`m no expert yet, but you`ll need a re-map/ fuel pump, turbo back exhaust for starters, but this will get you nowhere near your 400, in a WRX i think it would have to be the forged route for 400/400....but that`s only my little knowledge, i`m sure someone will correct, but i`m trying to help you...:thumb:

taylor-1982 13 April 2007 04:40 PM

Cheers Staffi.

Thought the STI was a forged set up already???

How do you like the Scooby compaired to the Tommi Mak??

turboDean 13 April 2007 04:49 PM

With an STI you would probably need:

Decent Exhaust with sports cat or de-cat
Maybe uprated fuel pump and reg
A slightly bigger turbo (lateral performance MD 321 H or T, H for around 400 and T for around 450)
Re-map
Possibly a FMIC would be a good idea aswell.

For a WRX the weakest point would be the gearbox so would either need rebuilding with PAR/PPG gearset or fit a 6 speed sti box

Yes, STI`s are forged.....

Different cars taylor obviously, the RA is mental upto about 130, it`s quicker then the Mak was and that had 379bhp as you know. It`s mapeed @ 1.4 bar 320-330 but only weighs just over 1110 kg..

I just prefer the Subaru if i`m honest, they have character IMO, but i`m not slagging the Evos off still awesome cars. Hope you get sorted mate.....:thumb:

So the sti is the way to go then??

So really all i would need is:

Exhaust system
Induction kit
Fuel Pump
Turbo
and a remap or ECU??

Ok to be honest, not that 4.5k Mitsi service everytime, fuel wise i`m probably about the same as the Mak, but in my opinon Subaru are that bit cheaper to run...kiss of death now...:lol1:

Have you tried looking on Pistonheads??? is yours up for sale yet??

taylor-1982 13 April 2007 05:14 PM

No not up for sale yet mate. So how much is a decent sti?? Thats good to hear didnt think it would be anymore!:Whatever_

APIDavid 13 April 2007 05:14 PM

You won't get a definite 400 hp from an STi or a WRX for 2 - 3 grand. Double that and you are in the ballpark.

You''ll need forged pistons, steel rods IE a rebuild in which case crank bearings, cam belt gaskets, etc etc. so about £2500.00 + Fitting
A clutch and flywheel capable of 400hp. @ £500.00
Stainless tubular headers. @ £400.00 for ones that work.....
3 inch decat exhaust. @ £400.00 + fitting
GOOD induction system. @ £125.00
Bigger injectors @ £300.00
high pressure fuel pump. @ £100.00 + fitting
BIG turbo MD321H is my choice. @ £1300.00
FMIC @ £800.00 fitted for one that works properly
and a remap @ £500.00

PLUS VAT

No doubt a few will get on and challenge those figures, but to be done professionally with people who know their stuff and get it right, that's a ballpark.

Remember, mates who work at Subaru dealers who moonlight will work for a drink, which professionals cannot compete with.

Thanks mate!! I can do all the fitting work myself.
I was under the impression that the STI wouldnt need new rods and pistons??
How far can you go on the standard internals then??

Not a bad price really:thumb:

APIDavid 13 April 2007 05:38 PM

03 onwards JDM will make/take 400 - but without any safe headroom. My own one gets the treatment and will show 400 on a dyno. Great fun to drive and if I break the engine - so what?

But to do that for a customer the risk is a bit high.

The STi 'forged ' pistons aren't really forged in the Cosworth / Omega sense of the word. They are still a good piston, but are original equipment compromise-type forgings that serve a purpose. 400 is possible but still with no safety margin.

AND 03 onwards STi pistons are ' hyper-Eutectic ' which is a posh word for Bullsh*t castings. They won't take decent levels of boost [+1.35 bar ] without fracturing ring lands and failing. Sti 7 JDM are the last fitted forged pistons in the manufacturers sense again.

The rods on 03 onwards STi are Ok, much stronger than anything previous But I cannot yet find any data from us or friend/competitors that suggests a safe limit for standard 03 rods. Fancy being a test pilot ?? I thought not:lol1:

Call me sometime for sensible chat about what is achievable with your budget.

OR even look at my late model cars for sale in case something tempts you:nono:

You may be bored of the Evo because it is characterless, but the work required out of a Subaru 2.0 to get a narrow power band (twin scroll, VVT or 2.5 excepted) 400 BHP is costly in comparison to the £200 or so to get some Evos to c.400 BHP with full boost at 2500 RPM :D

stevebt 13 April 2007 09:18 PM

you will need to pour some cash into a wrx to get it to safely run 400bhp !! if you are selling an evo8 why buy a WRX ???

TonyBurns 13 April 2007 10:28 PM

Powerstation do a 400+ package on the JDM new age (twin scroll model cars) for 2.5k ;)
If its one of Iains cars with the miltek exhaust then you wont have any problems, will run pretty much 400bhp with the turbo upgrade, upgraded injectors and a couple of other minor bits.
Also not known one JDM Twin scroll engine to let go, they are very strong considering they dont have those dodgy cast pistons ;)

Tony:)
