how can i indentify a 98wrx ecu and fit it to a uk wiring loom?
ive got 98 uk subaru running gear in my project car but i havnt got the transponder key so i carnt get it running, a couple of people on here have said that i can change the ecu for a 98 import unit, the bloke that a brought it all off said he will swap my uk ecu for the wrx version but i want to make sure i get the right one so does anyone know what the code or serial number is please? also do i need to buy anything else? ive been told i need to change some of the pins in the ecu to get this to work but i dont really understand exactly what i need to do, is this something i can do myself?

Hi James,
Sorry for not answering before via pm, have been on holiday. ECU At the input to the ECU you have a Cam sensor signal wire and a Crank sensor signal wire these need to be swapped with each other i.e replace the crank signal wire with the cam signal wire and cam signal wire with the crank signal wire. The only thing I dont have is the pin outs for a 97/98 ecu but I am sure someone else could help out. Do you know the code on the ecu casing your thinking of getting. Az |

James, you probably need to sort out the fuel pump wire, as it's likely to be the same as fitting an apexi ECU into a UK car, see https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...pexi+fuel+pump

Ive got one here from when it got taken out and a GEMS put in, PM me and we can come to an arrangement ;)
You may find that you can swap the wires under the bonnet for the cam and crank, but don't qoute me on that |
You just move it AFAIK. Simon normally releases it with a paperclip then clips is into the other location.

as said a paperclip is the best tool for the job.. special tool alert.. no not me the paper clip.
you pull up the back of the connector and then look in through the front of the plug and you will see a little kind of button.. you need to press this with the paper clip and wiggle the wire / pin and it should then come out the back of the plug. Simon |

ive just thort, does this mean im going to be running the wrx map? do they run a bit more power than the uk's, obviously with a higher octane fuel?

hold on.. the MAF on the uk and WRX are very different.. you need a WRX maf too.. :rolleyes: and even then the turbo is different.. this gets worse

the maf housing is larger on the wrx and sti..
wrx has a VF turbo.. uk td04.. until 99 when they both had the td04 fitted. This is where the extra power comes in.. the bigger turbo and different map... Simon |

alternative would be to buy the jdm ecu and maf.. and keep the uk one and try and sort the immobiliser issue.. must be a way around it.. just not likely to be public knowledge for obvious reasons.. but at least with maf and jdm ecu and wiring changed you can get it running to eliminate that as an issue if it doesn't start straight away etc..

Not sure if this is the guy or not, but iirc, there was someone who can take the immoboilisation out of the ecu The ECU Doctor
If not, maybe if you have the OBD socket and the transponder aeriel, then you could just tape a key to it. I bought a forester without keys (someone pinched them) I got a key from subaru and they coded it in for free, ok, you will have to tow the car to them, but with the ecu OBD socket, it will take the whole of 30 seconds to program the new key in. Saves all the messing of guessing what injectors, turbo maf the Jap car had that the ecu came out of |
