Rocker cover gasket leaking - should I use gasket sealant?

The infamous drivers side rocker cover gasket is leaking on my MY00 impreza.

Should I...

a) Take it apart and apply some gasket compund to seal it and re-fix it.
b) Replace it and not use any gasket compound.
c) Replace it and use some gasket compound.

Next question is what gasket compund? :wonder:

Hermetite has...

a) Red - Semi hardening Door number 1
b) Green - hard setting Door number 2
c) Golden - non setting Door number 3
d) Instant gasket Door number 4

.....or e) Hylomar blue sealent Door number 5

Please help!! :brickwall

cheers,
The hoff

I replaced mine the other day, got a new rubber gasket from subrau. It was only when I had the cover off that I realised the plastic blank at the end does not sit flush with the head so theres a slight gap, hence the leak. I'm going to take it off again this weekend and apply some Hylomar blue sealent around the blank. Its good stuff and easy to clean up should you need to remove it.

Dont forget to get new rubber seals for the bolts

I only replaced it about 6 months ago with new gasket, bolt seals and spark plug seals so I will just be replacing the large gasket this time.

Would only use 3 bond gasket sealer as is resistant to the high temps remeber the totally clean and degrease both surfaces and then put a smear of 3 bond sealer on faces and torque all bolts up evenly .

Just did this ******* of a job. Replace as a minimum the main RC gasket as well as the two spark plug gaskets and also any bolt washers that have seen better days. I had a hell of a job getting the right Three Bond stuff (1215 compound is what you want) - even Subaru didn't have it on the shelf and it's not the easiest thing to find anywhere else either. It has to be 1215, there are dozens of different Three Bond codes and they are all totally different from each other and do different jobs. Anyway 1215 is high temp silicone based gasket compound so instead I used bog standard Hermetite Instant Gasket (orange) from Halfords for a fiver and it works fine. A thin smear on every gasket surface and it's sealed up good.
