whats the seemingly redundant yellow plug hanging under my steering wheel for ??

Its the data connector for the Select Monitor

cut and paste that into your address bar
then click on Info and tips
then click on how to tips
then do the same on "how to reset your ECU


That will tell ya........

Posting on my girlfriends account - This is Shark

Be careful with yellow wiring on a car - it's SRS wiring generaly. The select monitor is an off yellow.
