Watching TV in America is annoying..

Hello

I'm currently in Atlanta and tonight is Lost and Jericho and I'm in for once. Wow, the adverts are irritating. Every 8 minutes!! I have actually stopped watching Lost and I'm going to download the torrent later.

I used to laugh at the Americans thinking they have 500 channels of crap and they kept fit by using remote control zapping exercises.

Now its exactly the same in the UK:(

It's getting like that here now though, especially on C4. Had to watch desperately rich housewives last night - the first add break comes when the opening credits end, after about 4 minutes. BB is the same. Then the adds last 5 mins as they're premium times.
I've heard there's some legislation due to stop them cranking up the volume of adverts too, which will save me muting them all the time.

The Zohan 29 March 2007 09:34 AM

Sky are getting bad, sky one it is around 9 mins in befre the adverts which last 3 mins or so.

The Yanks TV shows for example; a 60 min show is in effect 45 mins long, the rest being made up with adverts and fillers.

Shame it is happening hee as well, it is all about money and advertising evinues, not only do we have to pay a subscriptio and TV licence we also have to watch adverts, usually the same ones over and over again.

Simple really, after the watershed have soft porn style adverts, bit of breast, glimpse of snatch, etc, etc, should make those loo/beer filling breaks much more interesting ;)

" And all because the lady has nice breasts" Da-dar, da-da-da-da..... :D

My wife is addicted to NCIS, JAG, Law & Order etc.

I've noticed that the shows start at, say 9pm, and by 9.08 the first set of adverts is on. Then it's 9.22, or thereabouts, before another 5-minute break, and we go to around 9.40 into another 5 minute break and sometiomes a further break before it ends, with the inevitable break AT the end.

What the fek happened to breaks at 20 past, 20 to, and on the hour, like we, in the UK used to have?

We pay for the service, and so do the advertisers. There's no wonder Sky and others can afford such HUGE deals with the Premiership, etc:mad:

It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't show the same adverts or advertise their own programmes on every break, FX is very bad for doing this.

PS the new season of NCIS starts soon on FX.

Seen the (interminable) ads for it;)

Gibbs looks 70 in the new series, not 60 like in the present one;) ;)

I also hate it when after the advert the programme decides to review what's happened already, filling yet more time. I see it more and more often now. So in an hour programme, you'll probably only get 40 mins worth of stuff shown once, maybe less

Look how many 'adverts' the bbc runs between programmes now.

Markus 29 March 2007 04:15 PM

Ah the joy of adverts every few mins :D The frequency is one thing, the increase in volume is also annoying.

The other annoying factor is the warning info that is put up before nigh on every tv show, and sometimes when coming back from an advert break "Warning this program contains violence, blah, blah, blah". For some shows, yes, I could understand it, but for Star Trek, oh come on, that is just silly.

I've not seen UK TV for a while so I'm not sure if this is the norm in the UK these days, but I seem to recall you'd only see a message like that if it was truly warranted.

South Park is one of the best ones for it, as you get the channel's warning, then South Park's humorous one :D

Oh and speaking of Lost, Nikki and Paulo got what they deserved :D

Freak 29 March 2007 04:30 PM

I just counted.
During a 1 hour show this morning on fox (im in NY) 12 ad breaks

SJ_Skyline 29 March 2007 04:42 PM

Just got back from NY this week and to be honest, I don't watch enough tv for the adverts to get on my nerves. :)

Adidas 29 March 2007 05:07 PM

I remember watching a F1 race a few years ago when I was staying in NYC.

The down side was that they had an ad break after every 2nd lap , the upside was there was no James Allen :thumb: :)

Wurzel 29 March 2007 08:28 PM

Was watching CSI the other night and they had an ad break at 9:50 for 5 minutes, the prog finished at 9:56. 1 minute after restarting from the ad break.

Thankfully TSN's coverage of F1 isn't that badly interrupted as they use the ITV feed, which is far, far better than the Speed channel that has the seriously annoying old brit, David Hobbs, going on about things. He really is worse than Murray ever was, and James Allen is a pleasure to listen to compared to this idiot. He did race in F1, in six races, however his last race was in 1974, so his experiences of racing aren't exactly current, unlike a certain commentator on ITC, who at least raced fairly recently (1996 was his last race if I recall)

I work in the US a lot and the only two things I watch over there are the Daily Show and the Colbert Report - both very very funny (we get daily show on E4 now)

However I now watch english TV when in the US and full control of my UK TiVo thanks to my new gadget....

Yeah I'm a big fan of this gadget :)

Hated all the ads when I was studying in the States. Drove me up the wall.... made me do a bit more work though as I kept switching the TV off ;)
