USA insurance write off

So my friend just bought a car in USA that has been written off - the owner of the garage says that the laws there are different to UK and that even the slightest damage will see the car being written off ? ( he claims that only driver's door was hit and that because it had to be replaced and readjusted etc they decided to write it off ? :cuckoo: ) The car in question is mercedes cls55 amg with 20,000 miles on the clock and it cost him $60,000 (around 30,000 pounds)

Do you guys recon its a lemon ?

I can't see the Yanks having such a law.

A low value car can be written off with minimal damage, but if a £30,000 Merc had been written off, I'd want to see that repair invoice !

The funny thing is - there was no repair!!
The car was up for sale at the dealer with no door, he told my friend that it had an an accident and was written off and the damage was only done to the door ? :freak3:
So my friend checked it out, it looked ok - so he just ordered a door for it, fixed it in and paid the man his money.

i would stay away from that deal..... we try to repair EVERYTHING, including frame damage!:eek2: alot of the times (and with a skilled craftsman) it CAN be done, your situation just sounds fishy. why would they write it off with just door damage?

Ok actually, i missunderstood something - its not a write-off, but instead has a salvage title - does it change anything ?

wrx_yank 25 March 2007 03:46 PM

no, not really..... salvage tiltle means that it should be a "parts car"

I'd listen to Blackhawk Down on this. ;)

I think the fact it's £30,000 deal makes a difference. We're not talking about buying a 1978 Cortina at £300 !

Over there it`s a Taurus. I`m assuming it wouldn`t make sense to ask the spanish speaking americans to buy a ford "curtain" :)
