Handbrake shoes on 2000 Classic
 
My 2000AWD Turbo (2000) just failed its MOT due to the offside handbrake only having 7% effort.

I have new shoes coming Monday.

How easy are they to change?

Cheers for any advice.

7% seems a very precise figure ! They are adjustable from the inner aspect of the mechanism and unless you have been at the handbrake turns, then the shoes shouldn't be worn. I am wary of MOT stations now that 'if you don't get the repairs done with them, then you need a new test' It allows them to fail you on things that take a second to fix and bill you 30min labour to change a bulb !

I take it removal of the brake caliper and disc will give me access into the mechanism?

TBH, I did look at the cable adjustment and one side is not pulling up enough.

Could be that the shoes have siezed on one side?

How did they manage to find the brake effort for each wheel??

Every time i've taken my car to have an MOT, they have had to road test it to check the braking, coz they only have a machine to test 2 wheels at a time, which is no good for AWD cars as it can damage the diff's.

The handbrake shoe adjuster can be accessed just above the drive shaft. There is a small window which a flat screwdriver can be inserted and the mechanism adjusted. It is a cylinder with notches on it, can't remember if rotating it up or down tightens it. Have a look on 'search' and I'm sure you'll find all you need to know.

as said they should be tested on the road or with a brake plate tester
