Who said servicing a Porker was expensive ?

My MY03 996 C4S was due its 'major' 4 year service....... and its MOT.

Off to the OPC it went - using the pick-up/deliver home service (probably with some donuts in the local Tesco car park :D)......

First got phoned to say that the car will fail its MOT......... because it has a space deleted on the registration (***TRO instead of *** TRO)

Now the OPC want my V5 etc to make some new 'temporary' plates - but they are in storage with the rest of my house contents (mid house move) ! - so had to diss the MOT ! (but found a place around the corner - who will MOT it).

Anyway - get phoned at 5pm - car done.....

Major service inspection including......

Oil change/filter
Carbon a/c filter
Brake fluid change
Spark plugs changed
a/c serviced

£850 inc VAT....... JOB DONE !

Now that ain't bad IMHO. But then again the car has only got 18k miles on the clock :)

ScoobyJawa 15 March 2007 12:01 AM

850
:eek2:

eldudereno 15 March 2007 12:08 AM

£850 for bugger all...

Gear Head 15 March 2007 12:46 AM

Cheap as chips mate.

Janspeed 15 March 2007 01:15 AM

Not bad, here it goes for about €300 for a regular so.....:thumb:

Gutmann pug 15 March 2007 08:30 AM

That's quite funny ..........They stick it on the ramps, wander round having a quick look underneath while drinking tea. Get the apprentice to change the plugs and filters which they bought from GSF and charge you £850.

Bargain I say :D :D :D

Did you ask what their hourly rate was?

Gear Head 15 March 2007 09:14 AM

judging by the price....£800 per hour! :D

NotoriousREV 15 March 2007 09:19 AM

'kin 'ell, how do they get away with calling that a major service? £850? Twice what it would cost for an Impreza and that's expensive.

I've been quoted £500 for a major service on my VW and that includes cambelt change, new disks and pads and a brake fluid change plus the usual fluids/filters.

RoShamBo 15 March 2007 09:59 AM

Thats good "value" for a major service.
I run a 996 turbo & the last major service with nothing extra needed was £1200.
Last minor service came in at about £500.

But.....just had an MOT & front disks/pads.....£1,000. Nice.

I agree, my 986 had a major done and it was just over a grand.
850 for all that is good. (or bad which ever way you want to look at it)

Quatto 15 March 2007 11:33 AM

The dealer services on my old 911 were about £500 for a major service.

That included doing the tappets, which any air-cooled owner will know is quite a labour intensive task.

But they always overcharged on replacing wiper blades when there was nothing wrong with the old ones LOL.

Gastro 15 March 2007 01:27 PM

Perhaps I should explain a bit more....... a Major service is only every 4 years or 48k miles.......

Hourly rate is £90 + VAT

Remember an oil change (and spark plugs for that matter) on a 911 are a little more tricky than on a front engine Impreza.

My service prior to that was £350 :)

Mmmmm not really (certainly not on the 996's with their access panels built in that werenot on the 993's where the engine had to be dropped) Porsche quote a lot of labour for the job of changing spark plugs (well they would at their hourly rate) because they quote for removing the rear bumper to do the job. I have it on good authority that this isn't actually needed & if the bumper wasn't removed the job time would be slashed.

I have serviced a few Porkers in my time, for nothing....

jameswrx 15 March 2007 07:33 PM

It's just a 'rich' tax IMO. Porsche, BMW Mercedes etc.. all ridiculous servicing.

Looking through the receipts in my old M3 made for good reading, a few £1k+ bills.

At the end of the day they are just lumps of metal like a ford focus etc.

robby 15 March 2007 07:34 PM

£99.95 for a service and mot at halfords :)

If £850 for a service is expensive to you then don't buy a 911.

Its pretty simple really :p

Scrappy08 02 April 2007 05:25 AM

That sounds like a great bargain! Nice to hear about that.

Don't they need 16 litres of oil due to running a dry sump with a reservoir and pump at the front :wonder: Should have gone to Kwik Fit for their £10 oil change offer

GSF Prices....

Oil Filter - £5 to £8.50 max
A/C filter - £7.50 (assuming it's the "pollen filter")
Plugs - £1.25 to £2.40 each
Brake Fluid - £10 max (no different to any other car)
A/C service :wonder: - This must mean "turn it on, if it works, great. If not get someone in to re-gas it (unlikely)"
Allow another £60 for oil

So, taking the highest priced items...

£109.30 (inc VAT) + labour and whatever they mean by A/C service.

Snazy 02 April 2007 09:10 AM

Blimey!! Not THAT cheap!

My C service at GGR was only 500 and that was changing a few more fluids and filters than that.
Obviously a "higher marque" and all but that still sounds harsh for the work done.

fivetide 02 April 2007 11:02 AM

I'd have thought a 'major' service at 4 year intervals would have included a belt change or three especially for that price.

Listed items there are only a regular/middle service from what i can see and an air con re-gas is about £80 iirc

Well if you are happy then that's all that matters.

I would not call that a major service by any means, around two hours of labour and parts, assume labour at £ 150.00 per hour so £300.00
Parts: 6 x plugs, oil filter, a/c filter + oils look pretty expensive @ £370.00 + VAT.

IMHO a 'major' service would have included cam belt!

jaytc2003 03 April 2007 10:57 AM

the service items and labour should only be a few hundred max, however the collect and re deliver the vehicle along with the phone call probably doubled the cost!!!

Scrappy08 05 April 2007 07:40 AM

I guess that's nice to hear.

£800!! Not even slightly cheap, but hey it gets a magical dealer stamp in the book

SJJ84 07 April 2007 10:12 PM

Didn't think that number plates were even part of the mot? Certainly never used to be, having them spaced differently means they aren't road legal, not an mot failure though.
Sounds a lot for what you are actually getting, but for a Porsche service it really isn't as high as I would have expected.
