Hesitation advice needed

Mrs Sparkykev's 1997 Rover 214i has a problem when pulling under load, it hesitates, and seems to me its fuel rather than ignition.
It starts and idles great, but almost dies when you acccelerate under load, but if you ease off, it runs sweet as a nut. Again when cruising at speed it never misses a beat, on a 60 mile blast at 70 plus yesterday it ran like new.
I had a look under the bonnet for anything loose, missing , trapped etc but all looks ok.
Would it be worth spend a few £ on a new fuel filter?

Any ideas? Cheers.

My runnabout Mondeo does exactly this too.
Remedy suggestions include spark plugs and HT leads, and possibly problems with airflow meter.
Have a look under the bonnet when its running in the dark and look for arcing from the plug leads and dizzycap/coilpack.
I think the duel filter is unlikely, but anything is possible. Worth you trying for the sake of a tenner or so.

Im no closer to curing mine, but after giving it a damn good thrashing, it improved slightly. It now runs fine when cold but starts the stuttering when warmed up. Its perfectly driveable, but overtaking or pulling away in a hurry is a pain.

The car only cost me £150 so I have difficulty justifying £50 for new plugs and leads which may not cure it, when Im not keeping the car.
It will probably be going to the auction next week though as im collecting its replacement on wednesday.

Cheers David, well this is worth only £700 or so, and will be up for sale as soon as we cure this problem, so we don't want to spend loads on it either.
Its a shame because it runs great otherwise.

does sound like HT side poss plug or lead.

Probably MAP / MAF related if its under load...

My 420SLi has done the same sort of thing for the last year. Every now and then a slight hesitation, more often when it's very wet hardly ever when it's dry. I was worried about it to start with but now I treat it as part of a £350 cars temprement. It's not let me down in 13 months so I can forgive it a little hiccup every now and then.

I had this problem too in my old Mondeo. Fitting new plugs and leads cured it for me :)

Cheers lads.
If it was plugs and leads, wouldn't it struggle to start too? As it is, it starts first time every time.

Might just be a hairline crack somewhere in the system........
