Rocker cover

After replacing my radiator i still have a smell when the car is warm i have read on here it may be the rocker cover gasket that may need replacing. Please can some one post a pic of the rocker cover. I am going to do it myself as i am ok with a spanner just need pointing in the right direction. It is the drivers side and i am getting a bit of smoke. The only place that looks oily is under the header tank. I have done a search but found no pics so if some one has a link to a usefull thread please post.

is the smell of burning oil?

Neilg7777 11 March 2007 08:25 PM

yes m8 it was smoking today and when i opened the bonnet it looked like it was coming from the bottom of the engine / exhaust

ScuuBdoo 11 March 2007 08:29 PM

Sounds like rocker cover gasket. The oil seaps out and drips onto the hot exhaust causing the burning smell.

Its not too bad a job to sort. A couple of hundred to fix.

rocker covers are on either side of the engine. The spark plugs go through them. They cover the cam shafts... this is kinda simple mechanics which would make me wounder if you will be able to replace the gaskets when you dont even know what your looking for.

also could the oil be coming from the Power Steering fluid tank, these some times leak. althought the oil would not be likely to get to the exhaust from the power steering fluid tank.

Good Luck with it,
Gaz

If i get enough people confirming it is the rocker cover i am going to do it my self. Do subaru stock the gaskets or do they have to order
Many thanks Neil

Right changed the gaskets today £34 from subaru. Me and the 3 bottom bolts are on name terms (not good ones) . But when i went out for a drive i noticed a lot of smoke:confused: , i no it is coming from the exhaust is this the oil that has been spilt on it. I have had a look and can not see any leaks if so how long will this take to burn away. I have also get the idea on how to make a car - Put bolts in then put metal in the way so you can not get to them.:cuckoo: sorry going a little bit mad:freak3: If its leaking then its off to the garage.

dude-you've got a progressively worsening burning smell with increased levels of smoke comming from your engine and exhaust........stop messing around with a spanner get that car to a pro for a check up while theres still life in her, your trying to save a few quid with diy fix it, not a bad idea at all but get it checked before its too late

lightwave693 15 March 2007 10:05 PM

it does take a little while to burn away, did a lot come out when changing the gaskets? how many miles has the car done? crank shaft oil seal tends to go at around 100k....

Yes a bit came out and went inbetween the exhaust heat shield. Car has done 65000 miles. The problem i have now is since changing the rocker cover the car stalls when you press the clutch. Only does it when warm. going to check all the conections tonight
