Getting a better Wi-fi signal on a laptop

My current Wi-fi Mini PCI card in the laptop, gets 11mbps. So I'm assuming its a 802.11b. If I got a better card, I know the speed will be better, 54mbps or more. but is a way of improving the signal? It has antenna that goes up under the screen. Just wondered if anyone knew of a good way of improving it.
