After the tale of woes I've had trying to cure my 'knock' I am pleased to report they've sorted it.

The Problem:
Knocking sound from engine bay when car first starts up when warm or when brakes pressed while stationary or when steering wheel/power steering twitched while stationary.

Action Taken:
2 cam belt tensioners and 1 complete engine removal and rebuild.

The Solution:
It was a knocking metal pipe that runs along the bulkhead from the servo to the manifold on the left (passenger) bank of the engine. Lift your bonnet and it is right in front of you running round the back of the intercooler. They removed the fixings, added rubber washers and refixed it. They are also going to replace the rubber pipe that goes into the servo as it is probably the non-return valve in here which is causing the knock.

Full credit must go to Nick and Kev at F. R. Pulleyn in York. This problem almost became a personal conquest to them. Up until now IM had been calling all the shots but I took it down Monday this week and Kev had one in that was even worse than mine and as a result easier to track the noise. Half an hour later it was sorted.

Thanks for all your support on this BBS chaps. I will mail the 4 of you who replied 'mine does that' to make sure you get the solution.

I can now go and enjoy my hand built engine thankyou very much, my God what a difference.

Otis,

Top news it's fixed. My old Cav GSI used to make a seal barking noise when nearing full lock. This was down to the design of the PS pipes. These were revised on later models.

JF Smugger than a smug thing?

Tell me about it John. To be honest I think if IM had not been called in immediately and provided their 'guidance' the dealer would have probably sorted it on their own http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif.

Actually Otis, why the heck didn't the garage spot this earlier on, surely it can't be that hard if JF spotted it without even seeing/hearing the car!

Greg,

In their defence IM came and looked at it and the dealer just followed their guidance. It was impossible to hear in the engine bay and we actually solved it first on another car they had in that was 3 times louder than mine. We tried the same action on mine and hey presto. I'm totally satisfied with the dealer and sure they did everything they could.
