What happened to Top Gear :(

God, having missed most of the current series of Top Gear, I must say I'm absolutely appauled by tonights episode. Whilst it was relatively entertaining, they only actually reviewed ONE car! And that was a £190,000 'hyper car' which isn't something anybody will want to buy.

Rather than discussing which tractor is best for farming for 45 minutes of the show, I'd much rather they just test drove some bloody cars! It's such a shame, the show has such a good premise to be fantastic, the presenters are all great (Jeremy Clarkson especially), yet they're just being turned into some kinda stupid comedy skit for Sunday nights. It's embarrassing..

Anybody else feel the same??

I hear where ur coming from

RUDDY 25 February 2007 09:57 PM

not really! if they bored us all with car reviews there wouldnt be a top gear would there! it would be on channel 5 at 1 am!

Whilst I agree you do need some entertainment in there, I really do think they've just gone way over the top. It's a car show, yet they only actually spent 5-10 minutes talking about actual cars. The rest of the time they're being silly.

They had it perfect in the last series I thought. It had a good balance between entertainment and car related stuff.

samcowrx 25 February 2007 10:02 PM

Top gear is great entertainment, i really do not watch it for car reviews, i watch it to laugh and see people act like idiots in fast cars, superb. If i wanted to see a review on a car i would research it and buy a few magazines. That said the farming thing was a bit crap and pointless.

taffyboyo 25 February 2007 10:05 PM

agree, they should concentrate on cars and motoring rather than just having a laugh, in the last 2 series they have got the balance right, but in this one :( they have gone too far with the crap ;)

I quite agree. I suppose I didn't put my point across properly.. I'm all for the crazy stuff in fast cars, that's fantastic. But stuff like the 'star in a reasonably priced car' and the whole farming thing tonight.. it's just getting less car-oriented as it goes on.

I didn't mean I just want to see reviews of boring every day cars, I just mean I'd actually like to see... some cars!

it took me that long to type, but I wrote the same rubbish as you ;)

samcowrx 25 February 2007 10:10 PM

definately more cars on the show would be a good idea

Alan MaC 25 February 2007 10:12 PM

Got to admit, unless you were an extra fro Emerdale, not a lot of point ( usually briliant) to tonight's show.

Kevin Groat 25 February 2007 10:23 PM

Entertainment wise, one of the best programmes ever....more car reviews? would you seriously buy a car on their suggestion?

X30NGO 25 February 2007 10:24 PM

Top gear these days, ain't a car show as such. It's not a show that you need to be into cars, to watch. It's a ****ing entertaining show, with comedy and humour, facts and stories, with a few good presenters liked by all, that happens to be based around cars.

Watch the tedious fifth gear and all the other 'car' shows for plain reviews. They may as well be dead and buried, becasue for reviews, we now have the internet and magazines, where Top gear fills us with fun on a sunday night!

I appreciate that it's each to their own. Top Gear to me is just a ****hot show that shows the best and the different in the motor vehicle world. If i want to know how good the new Skoda Octavia is, i can go on the websites and read the magazines.

Everyone's different though...

I kind of agree, but sometimes its just too scripted, you know that most of the stuff that happens is preordained!

Having said that when I saw Jeremy towing that 747 I need split my sides:lol1:

Gotta admit, the 747 bit did crack me up.

But yea, it's all -very- scripted now.. even the little bits of banter in the studio have blatently been pre-written.

scooby-roo 25 February 2007 10:37 PM

top gear

yeah to be fair it is more of a comedy show than factual. mind you some of the stuff is pretty side ripping stuff.:lol1:

jubhi 25 February 2007 10:38 PM

I thought today's show was crap, only part worth watching was the Lambo.

They have gone too far with the entertainment and comedy factor. I mean who gives a crap about tractors

And also Clarkson got serious issues if he fancy's that ugly bird that came on the show:lol1: I thought she looked a bit like a 20 year older version of Vicki Bulter Henderson, well the face anyway!! :lol1:

Top Gear was crap tonight overall for me.

stiscooby 25 February 2007 10:58 PM

Yep tonight’s show was a bit crap.... I agree that they need to have some sodding about in the show as well as cars, that makes it more entertaining to watch, but it does need to be a good balance of each not 40 mins of tractors!

It is getting a bit too predictable now e.g. the bit when they were trying to reverse their tractors and Hammond hit that "the only one Vauxhall of that type" yea sure it was. As they mentioned the "pull what you can find" challenge I turned to the misses and said bet Clarkson will be pulling that Jumbo (you always see it in the background when they are driving around the track).

I think it should be more like the last series as that seemed to have a better balance of both cars and cocking about.

KIPS 25 February 2007 11:08 PM

Spotted three scoobies on there in the background

Rob_Impreza99 25 February 2007 11:14 PM

I missed tonights but will watch it in the week.

I thought last weeks show was hilarious, i think the perfect balance would be to have 30 mins solid reviewing of cars and have the other half of the show as light entertainment like what they did in America last week of which the graffiti they wrote on each others cars was really funny considering what state in America they were in :lol1:

95blackWRX 26 February 2007 12:01 AM

who cares about car reveiws i dont watch to hear them go on about cars all the time would rather watch them messing about having a laugh if u want car reveiws watch that ****e on channel 5

Fuzz 26 February 2007 01:40 AM

Well I was absolutely PMSL at the stig falling out of the driving seat in the jcb tractor. Might be because I'm from that background and could relate to all the farm stuff.
It wasn't just a random "I know, lets race some tractors".
There is the bigger picture of bio fuel and the fact it wont be long before it becomes mainstream.
Well planned direction I think!

Train crash was
You know people do it.. goes to show if there was anyone in that Espace they'd be painted on the inside of it (if the inside hadn't come through the far side of the car).
Shame JC made a crap joke about florescent jackets.

I went back to what I was doing on the PC when the lambo was on. :lol1:

slagmagnet69 26 February 2007 06:48 AM

IMO that was the funniest top gear ever but I agree - they should deffo review more cars and cut with the tractor **** and blowing things up. :)

LG John 26 February 2007 07:14 AM

When and what channel is the repeat?

911 26 February 2007 07:22 AM

It is a comic/magazine at best IMHO.
Last year's balance was best, but there is the need to keep people switch-on and telling everyone about it at work/bus stops/pubs/swimming baths etc etc.

Last night's was simply too much, but some days are better than others as in all things.

Graham.

mgcvk 26 February 2007 08:45 AM

Yeah last night was a bit much though still entertaining. Its running the risk of becoming a bit like the opposite of the Girly Show with Sarah Cox et al back in the nineties. That became tiresome in the end. I wouldn't mind being a TG presenter though, not a bad job driving fast cars and blowing things up!

Chris L 26 February 2007 08:51 AM

Don't forget that most of the stuff you're seeing was filmed in the summer before the big crash. It's likely that Hammond isn't quite back to doing everything as before, so they are filling time a little. I reckon you will see a different show with the new series. Did make me laugh last night a few times though. Great entertainment - which is what it has always meant to be.

Chris

Anders_WR1 26 February 2007 09:25 AM

It's funny, but why not alternate between the funny stuff and technical features or something? ie how engines work, building hybrid turbo's, VTEC and ECU mapping!

Why not do group tests on to find:

- the best brake pads for hard braking or the best budget pad
- which air filter has the best flow while still retain some filtering
- Best bang for buck mod to do to a car to improve the handling, with before and after timed lap around their track
- Which exhaust gives more power
- Best high performance tyre / budget tyre
- The brightest HID light conversion kit
- etc etc

Surely if they can give cars good or bad reviews, they can give good or bad reviews on these products too?

Cheers

Anders

brumdaisy 26 February 2007 09:26 AM

Too scripted and whilst some of the gags are good but would be better if they were more about cars?

And can someone please explain the train crash gag - I thought it was quite serious to begin with but just ended with a rather stupid (and badly timed) gag about high viz jackets

Chris L 26 February 2007 10:39 AM

Because Anders, if they did that, their viewing audience would fall to about 10. I like my cars, but an hour of that and I'd turn off!

Brumdaisy - I think his point was (in a round about way) - if you are stupid enough to try and jump a red light at a level crossing, then you pretty much get what you deserve! Natural selection as far as I can see...

DCI Gene Hunt 26 February 2007 10:46 AM

I like to see the lads cocking around, reviewing hyper cars, the stig driving fast tractors, stars driving ****e cars, general car news, etc, etc.......:thumb:

You'll be moaning about porno's not having realistic plotlines next ;)
