Turbo Questions
Just took my IHI VF10 off my 1994 WRX. ZERO play side to side but in and out it has about 3-4mm of play. Am im talking rebuild time or is there another turbo i can use. I know of a VF35 going for sale... Will this be suitable for my car and what mods will i need to make it compatable. I just bought a Z4 ecu so will this help me choose another turbo if need be.

the vf35 turbo is ok but if your going to get anther turbo (which i think you should with 3-4mm of play) then why dont you get a TD05 which goes straight on, as that is what is on the sti, look on fleabay they are cheap enough, the vf range are bearing turbo, better but they arnt as powerfull as the TD range, (TD05's are good for 350 with all the mods, vf's are good for around 270-295 as you go up the numbers), good luck, phil.

vf23 as mine is good for about 350bhp at 1.45bar with good mods. and a lot of vf are OE turbos on sti! :lol1:
|
vf34 is far better than a td05 if you can get a vf34 go with it they are good for 350bhp with the mods and are a roller bearing turbo better than the td05
|
is that right, i had a vf28 on mine but i was told it was only good for 290ish, so i changed it to a TD05 which felt the same anyway, mine is an sti so the vf28 was probably original, sorry for the wrong info.

The VF28 is goof for upto 330bhp with the right mods,

Briefly, TD05 highest potential output (can go to 350bhp) over the VF 30/34/35 etc. Also reknowned for being a VERY tough piece of kit! I believe its what the Z4 ECU is mapped for too (though stand to be corrected) If you're not installing appropriate mods and sticking with the base map on the z4, I think you're limited to 260ish bhp though. TBH at these power levels the Td05 is far from idea as its significantly slower to spool up than a TD04 which can produce sufficient boost for this power level comfortably (but that means supporting mods and new re-mappable ECU) VF35 Is the one if you value spool up over power. With the right supporting mods its a 330bhp turbo. The VF 34 might give you 10-20bhp more at the top end, but the spool up isn't quite as good as the VF35. Not sure about fitting them or compatibilty with the Z4 base map Ns04 |
well i do eventually want more power. Just now i just want my engine 100%...
what mods do you suggest or is it the usual. Better IC, Fuel pressure, injectors and remap... Its on stock headers |
i am confused... i have swaped my TD04 for a TD05 turbo... i am driving a blob eye scooby and i dun feel much changes in the turbo? how come? my engine is still stock as well as my ECU.... i heard a TD05 can produce up too 300bhp... how do i achive this...
although i have a boost controller.. with 1.2 bar |
Well just bought a TD04 with 30k on it.
Got her for £60 so its a bonus.. plus im sure these were standard on the 1995-6 WRx's with the Z4 ECU. |
The Z4 is for use with the TD05 - on early classics the TD04's were fitted to JDM WRX Wagons.

There should be a big difference between the TD05 & TD04 - The TD05 with the correct mods will make ~350hp whereas the TD04 will be around the 300 mark. You may have a boost controller fitted but it would be advantageous to have the ECU mapped for the TD05 to get the best from it - also for safety and longetivity of the engine as the ECU will be mapped for use with the TD04, the TD05 will outflow the TD04 considerably so will therefore move into areas of the maps not normally used which could cause the engine to DET. i did install a A/F ratio gauge from Dynojet to see if i was running lean with the upgrade to the TD05 What mods do you currently have fitted? Cheers |
i've install a wideband A/F ratio.. other mods i have would be a 3 inch exhaust cat back... K&N drop in filter...boost controller... and TD05 turbo..
engine components are still stock same with the ECu |
