205 gti... liabilty/drain on the pocket??

Ive been hankering for a 205 1.9 gti for a while now.
It will have been 10 years this month since i had my last one. (silver 1.6gti).

I fancy getting rid of the wifes car and buying an enduro (wrf/crf) and a 205 1.9 gti but my last 205 has made me wary of buying another one.

My 205 went through 1 engine and had 2 headgaskets/head skimmed on the second engine.

Back in 1997 i didnt really look for a decent 205gti... i had just passed my driving test, had 3k burning a hole in my pocket and i wanted to get on the road asap.

So my question is.... is it possible to buy a 205 gti (without spending 2k+) that wont break down every 3 weeks like my old one.

ive seen this one on ebay that looks like its in good condition.

its only up the road from me

I very nearly bought this one (was originally at buy it now at £400 )
eBay.co.uk: 1992 PEUGEOT 205 GTI BLUE (item 300080792026 end time 19-Feb-07 15:38:38 GMT)
with the view to fixing it but i came to the conclusion id be looking at the thick end of 1k and lots of work that i really didnt know how to do myself. (so the wife said)

ps... if anyone is bidding on this and wants a copy of the hpi check i did on it let me know

I've had 3 and wouldn't say no to another one. Sadly, I think they are at an age where they are really only going to be suited to being tucked away most of the time or ragged to death on a track.

My GF loves them too and really wants one as a daily but I think we'll be lucky to find one that doesn't give trouble.

Last one we bought the valve seals were gone. Knocked the guy down to bugger all and got a friend whos ex-Pug to sort the valves out.

It was fine after but its main issue was starting in the wet. Last 2 I had had issues with wet starts. Just spit on it and it wouldn't start. Had the usual cutting out at junctions but thats an easy sort.

We'd love one but I'm not sure they work as a daily anymore. If someone corrects me, please do. We'll buy another for sure :)

Had mine over three years and it has had quite a hard life :D :D It just keeps coming back and asking for more.

Brilliant little car

ScoobyJawa 14 February 2007 02:21 PM

No probs with mine but it only does around 1k a year!

As long as you are fairly handy with a spanner nothing is too diff anyway :)

mmuuzzyy 14 February 2007 02:35 PM

any photo's of your 205's?

Whats the score with miami blue 1.9s......Are all miami blue 1.9's special editions??

ScoobyJawa 14 February 2007 03:31 PM

No. Special editions come in 1.6 and 1.9 guises - they have grey carpet instead of red. After that miami and sorrento were an option.

I have the best colour - sorrento, all the miami fanboys will be along in a minute but you'll soon realise they are all shirt lifters ;) :p :D

As for pics, well - if we must

another person with a 205 uses them on his and runs thru speed cameras etc and you get the bill!

cottonfoo 14 February 2007 05:15 PM

And when you say it wasn't you, well they don't actually care :)

Gutmann pug 14 February 2007 05:44 PM

The car is pretty tough as Gary has stated.
The good news is that the car is cheap to repair if it does go wrong, and that there is a host of experts and web forums if you want advice, and there are many specialists that do not charge dealer prices.
Good luck.
Be patient I took 6 months to get the one that felt right for me, some often come up on Scoobynet for sale section.
I sold mine after 2 years ownership, never regretted buying it, regret selling it.
(Esp after seeing the pics of the Sorrento Green, identical to my old one,and just as well polished!!)

ah we havent had a 205 pic bundle on here for a while..

I'd say you can easily get a reliable (ish) minter for £2k. Get yourself onto the 205 forums and find an enthusiast selling his pride and joy. Good ones go for about £1k

For £2k you'd also get a very decent 205 mi16/gti6 and you'll never stop smiling!

mmuuzzyy 14 February 2007 08:40 PM

Lovely looking 205's!!

So i take it its possible to buy mint reliable ones.:notworthy

There was a lovely sorrento green 205 on ebay the other week but it was delisted early.

what are the best 205 sites for me to look at ?

mmuuzzyy 14 February 2007 08:46 PM

is this one overpriced on the buy it now??

only done 44k

But I wouldn't buy it for a few reasons:
- being so mint he'd want a fortune..look at the buy it now price
- I prefer Ph2 GTIs, better interior etc
- The engine hasnt been revved. therefore the top of the liners will undoubtedly have a lip, which means nackered rings as soon as you rag it.

Forums to check out are:

205GTIDrivers.com - great forum
Peugeot Sport Official Owners Club Forums - can be a bit dull at times

Ive been offered the ex's old rallye for 200 and im sorely tempted:D

Dream Weaver 15 February 2007 10:17 AM

They are reliable providing you replace the main stuff.

If I had my time again, i'd go for a std 1.9 8v in good condition. Mine is a modded 16v and not as much fun to drive any more.

If you get one, you can renew all the suspension components for around £500 which will transform it. Renew the brakes, tidy the engine bay up, service the rear beam and make sure the engine is good.

That would cost you maybe £1k, and you'd have a nice reliable car. They are easy to work on as well. I had little spanner experience before rebuilding mine, but i've now done the whole lot - suspension, throttle bodies, engine, interior - all done myself with basic equipment (except the engine rebuild).

They are a money pit if you get too involved though ;)

Blimey, never thought i'd hear you say that :(

Izzy 15 February 2007 01:44 PM

Never had a 205...... Always heard they were good but sounds like I've missed out on a good experience ! :(

For all out power in a straight line, mine can't be beaten, but on track or round country lanes the std 8V is just as much fun as it all comes down to handling then.

Mine actually has too much power on country roads and you can go way too fast if you're not careful.

Plus being modded, mine isn't the easiest thing to get going, or dive sedately - its either all out or nothing.

The key to a 205 is really about having fun with it, i've put too much time and money into mine and it was more fun when it stood me at £2.5k then the current £7k.

I do have brand new suspension to be fitted though, so I may change my mind once thats done, as it is letting the side down now ;)

KAM Racing 15 February 2007 04:00 PM

if you run it as a second/weekend fun car then go for it. If you are thinking about running one everyday then i would say its a bad idea. They are getting on a bit and many parts are worn out. Cheap ones are usually knackered. if you dont know much about them then buy the most expensive one you can afford (private buyers I mean) and look for a massive folder of reciepts and invoices and for things that show its been cared for like the orginal service book and manual, all mots etc etc.
I've sat with an owner for about 2 hours going through all the paperwork to make sure I bought one thats had a lot of TLC

What's your plan, Gary?

Adidas 15 February 2007 04:17 PM

Had my 1.6 Pug just over 2 years now. The first year I spent way more then the car was worth, but since then (touch wood) it hasn't cost me a bean other then the usual consumables.

It's a very good runner on an H plate with just over 120k on the clock, 17 of which I've done The only down side is the drivers seat is shot to pieces.

TBH, I'm now getting bored with it and am on the look out for something else to use as a 2nd car. :)

Steve Whitehorn 15 February 2007 05:48 PM

I always felt that the gearbox in the good old 205 was one of the nicest I have ever come across in terms of the way it felt. Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

I would like to drive a 205Gti again one day just for old times sake.

Steve:)

Once you have a good one, running costs are pretty much none existant and thats the main reason I haven't sold mine now for something newer.

Insurance: £440 p/a
Servicing: £50 p/a
Tax: £200 p/a
MOT: £50 p/a

So a nice quick car that costs at most £70 a month to run.

Even when I look at how much i've spent in total, it only works out at £2k a year, although better not look at cost per mile ;)
