Clutch Lifespan?

hi,
I've got a 2004 STi with 24500 on the clock and the clutch feels like it's started slipping. Surely the clutch can't be on its way out yet can it? How long do they last? I know it depends on the way you drive. I'm not driving Miss Daisy but I certainly don't abuse it either. Strange thing is it seems most noticeable accelerating in 3rd gear around 4500 revs. It seems to slip and then pick up again. Anyone any ideas?
Cheers, Toby

I know of a few STI's and at least one WR1 that had to have the clutch replaced at about 25k:(
At 4500 rpm your turbo will probably be hitting its max boost and the car will be producing pretty near max torque which will cause a worn clutch to slip.

Just noticed you said 3rd gear. I would expect it to be more noticeable in higher gears:wonder:

I'll try it in higher gears when I get the chance. Any idea how much it's gonna cost?

Mine started in slipping in 5th first at around 4500rpm, now slipping in fourth aswell, but my car has done 64K on the standard clutch so not to bad.

I'm running a group buy on clutchs and flywheels at the mo:

If I have the clutch done at somewhere other than a main dealer will I lose my warranty?

74,000miles here and still going strong.

Clutches have an average life of around 90,000miles in the hands of someone who can drive properly - judge your driving skill by how soon you need to replace your clutch!

The Clutch Kit can be got for about £130

I've done over 200k miles without a clutch change...different cars though :)
Do I win a prize?

Pete, how come your clutch has lasted so long when you use it both for the usual business of changing up, but also for the old-fashioned slowing down by engine braking? :)

Not covered by Warranty if worn out, so why worry ;) better to rplace it with a much cheaper and better clutch ;) Most that a re slipping tend to feck the Flywheel are need to be skimmed or replaced ;)

BTW 2003 I replaced mine MY02StiUK at 18 months 16K miles and Dealer with OEM clutch and Flywheel was £1600. others "specalists" were around £1000 for Ap and lightened Flywheel.

The original clutch on my 1995 2.2 Vtec Prelude was still going strong at 130,000 miles when I traded the old dear in. Maybe I drive like Mrs lewis !! :lol1:

my98 with 135K miles and original clutch, judders but no slipping, i know the clutch is living on borrowed time due to the mileage, but what a car.
