Funky Smell in my 00 classic!

And before anyone thinks it, I haven't dropped my bag! ;)

Every now and then, I will be sat with the car ticking over and get a whiff of fumes inside. I sometimes think it might be the car in front, but then when there is no-one else to blame, I gotta re-evaluate that.

Is there any way that exhaust fumes can make their way back under the bonnet? Has anyone else ever had this?

Ta,

Andy

If you have the heating set to "outside air" and the fan on, of course WHATEVER is outside can come in.

Is what you are smelling a bit like bad eggs, (hydrogen sulphide?).

I've had this from other cars, and it's from their cats.

If it's like a burning oil smell rather than petrol fumes then more than likely the rocker cover gasket which leaks and drips small amounts of oil onto hot things :)

if its petrol fumes you hay have a leaky fuel pump cover ??

It is definately exhaust fumes. Maybe an exhaust gasket (if they are used?).

More likely to be what funky spider said.

Rocker cover dripping onto he exhaust headers, It's fine whilst your moving but then drips at a stand still & is pulled in by the heater as the fumes rise with the heat ;)

OEM Exhaust Gaskets for Subaru Impreza 2002-2006 WRX and STi, JSC Speed
That's the gaskets you will have (pretty sure 00 are all in same position as newage)

Could also be crack in the up-pipe as the solid ones have been known to fracture, as have the flexi joint ones due to high temp fluctuation and movement. I'd investigate rocker cover first (drivers side) as it's a common one and has happened to most of the ppl I know with classics.
