New SCAM text messages - +20105996500
Looks like there is a new SMS scam going around.
Got a message today - "We currently have a message awaiting your collection. To collect call 0871 872 3818" The message came from an Egyption number so thought it looked suspicious. Did a quick search on the net and found it is a scam. The Egypt number looks like an SMS relay number, and they are now using 0871 numbers, which earn less money but are harder to track down. |
If that was in ireland it would b a mobile number
|
I had this tonight just hit delete
if someone messages me and its important they can ring me KIP |

People of our age yes, but is my Grandmother had recieved it, there is a good chance she may have called it.
And those are the kind of people most affected by these scams  |
This is why technology should operate a license system; don't understand what you're doing? Don't have the kit! lol :D
|
I had a missed call yesterday from a +87 number... Wondered what it was. Scoobynet comes to the rescue again.
And before anyone asks, of course I didn't call it back! |
Ah, I've just looked and the number is different: +871 550 4081
|
I have had the message left on my landline a few times last year (from a polite sounding UK guy).
Why leave a message telling me to collect a message???? |

Got this yesterday, knew it would be a scam but out of curiosity I just googled the number and found the egyptian scam explained :)
|
I got a similar thing but it was legit.
|
Don't understand the issue with the 0871 numbers. I thought they were just mobile numbers, how do they manage to earn from them?
Clearly I would not bother to call one, its rare I even bother with my voicemail :lol1: |
I have just had the same call twice but i hung up before i got the full explanation.
This is BT sms service from +21 .. i hung up at this. Is anyone getting this ?? 08456021111 is the number |
0871 are flat pence per minute numbers, no more than 10p/min !

The 0871 numbers are technically premium rate, but don't cost much eg. 10ppm. When you call them they put you on hold for 5 minutes earning themselves 50p in the process. The common ones are a message left saying 'Hi, this is James from the information team, please dial xxxxx to collect your message.' The telco I work for bars the numbers as soon as we hear of them. They use 0871 numbers as they're not normally covered by standard premium rate barring that telcos provide to stop people running up huge debts.
as an aside, we had a customer run up a £1407 call a couple of weeks ago when they called a helpline but didn't put the phone down properly!!! |
