How do I get out of this one?

I cannot get the N/S rear driveshaft out of the diff no matter how hard I pull at it using the drive shaft as a slide hammer etc.

Does anyone know a trick I'm missing to get the bloody thing out?

I've popped Impreza shafts before, but this one is ridiculous.

Graham.

from the other side if it's not an open diff there shouldn't be a centre pin so you can thump it through with a suitable drift?

Normally though a prybar under the inner cv, levered off the diff case is enough to pop the ring

Cant you put something wedge shaped like a big chisel between the inner cup and diff casing?

Have you tried using a pry bar between the diff casing and the inner CV joint casing? Mine popped out with the minimum of pressure last weekend

Thanks to all.
I've tried 2 big screwdrivers as I've never needed to use a pry bar ever on a car for the last 33 years, but there is always a first time...

Down to Halfords I guess or Machine Mart.

Bloody irritating though as the CV would not go fully home at first, so I thought i would pop it out, swear at the stupid C ring and pop it back in..

Getting to hate this friggin car this winter.

I will try 2 pry bars and see if that will do the trick, but i have a bad feeling about this.
The diff is a plated one all just set-up and nice at API. I can see me stripping it all out of the car and down to API soon!

Graham.

Finally got it apart by hammering violently the CV out of the diff using a long drift.
Broke the C clip in doing so.

Whata game, took 4 hours in all.

You had an easy Job Graham, i've been working on my old Rover estate today, only to shear a bold on the front suspension, the bolt goes into a captive nut, that is invisible....... i'm gonna have to try and dril the rest of the bolt out, if that fails i'll scrap the car as it's just not worth changing the damn subframe...... still, at least you got yours sorted....... i'm sure awkward jobs only ever need doing in the winter when it's cold and my fingers are split to hell........

Roll on summer evening to work on cars eh!!

Missed a bit out of all this but it got worse before it got better...
BUT, I want to say a big THANKS to Rob at API for advice today, everything fits right and works!

Transmissions are not simple!

Graham :D

Some people are simple ! transmissions don't have any particular intelligence.
