Yes, 'tis true.....
Whilst driving home from Donno my turbo finally gave up the ghost. I hadn't mentioned it until now as I wanted to find out exactly what the problem was. I guess 70,000 hard miles have finally taken their toll. As my warranty has now expired, and IM were aware of my d/p mods anyway, I'm going to have to sort it myself. Still, may be a good excuse to fit a different turbo altogether. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif So, if you see someone wave at you from a old light green Mercedes estate, it's probably me! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif Stef. |
Really unlucky m8! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif
Still it saw some good times - hope you are back in a scoob soon! Rich. |
Sorry to hear that Stef, hope you get it sorted soon.
Rgds, Alex |
Stef,
The only ways is up! You know it makes sense.... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif Sorry to here CK1 has suffered yet another trauma. I think perhaps the owner should treat it to a bit of TLC in the recooperation process as reward for all the months of faithful service in the cause of CK'ing http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif. Hope she's "on track" soon (but not with too much power!). LOL Mike R |
And now .........the end is near ..............and so I face...... the final Track day.
Sorry to hear it M8, looking forward to hearing what you fit instead. SJD |
Thanks guys.
CK1 has been driven harder than most I guess, but that's why I bought it. Believe it or not, I am driving far more smoothly and with more mechanical sympathy http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif than I used to now that the warranty is up, but none of my gauges could warn me of impending turbo failure. I think I'll take my time with it over the winter and do a few other 'minor mods' as well. CK1 will be back bigger and better, just wait and see. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif You'd better sort your driving out Rainbowman! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif Stef. |
Stef, sorry to hear about the car.
How were the new arb's? I emailed you last week some time. Hope all is well with CK1 in the not too distant future. Cheers...... |
nothing to do with the installation of the Prodrive ECU?
|
So let me get this straight, your turbo lets go on the way BACK from a track day? And you put it down to the car being a little tired......I've got one word for you my girlie named friend......espionage! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
I was told by my dealer (car not coke) that only prodrive can install and set up their ECU's, I know he's bound to say that but the fact that my car was delivered with PPP and 70 miles on the clock suggests that either A: Needs a lot of setting up or..... B: Spotty little f.u.c.k YTS trainee has been getting cheap thrills at my expense. |
mine had 106 miles on the clock - quite alot for a brand new 28K car!!!!
The salesman swore they hadn't driven it (B&C), so it was all down to prodrive. |
So that would suggest that each car is different and requires individual setting up. Thats where ya sausage and mash goes darlinks.
|
AFAIK the prodrive ECU is just a bang it in replacement. It is not mappable at all just like the std ECU.
It's just a STi ECU instead of a boggo one. Anyhow, how can an electronic ECU make a mechanical item fail? (apart from pistons of course!) The turbo is just a pump!! Stef:- did it let go big stylee - ie mega white smoke, no power, oh f**k style, or just a gentle whimper?? |
Do you think this could be related to why you got a bad reading on the rollers on Saturday??
|
Fosters,
I got my car from B&C without PPP and that had 37 miles on the clock when I picked it up. Makes you wonder what happened to it in those 37 miles!! As for the salesman swearing they hadn't driven it from personal experience I wouldn't believe a word B&C say. |
Not being an expert (more a motorbike man myself) but the ECU does have an instrumental role in fueling mixture. A lean mixture tends to give more power but runs hotter and results in hotter exhaust gases, this could have a direct affect on the turbo could it not?
Any thoughts? |
oops...
Sorry I didn't stop to try and do, well nothing by the sounds of it, I was in 'super cruise' and saw you too late to pull over and help! Get a spare engine as well as a VF28, join the race for the most powerfull UK car while you still can http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif |
I'm not suprised it gone, 70k ain't bad for a turbo. Especially as you've driven the car most enthusiastically for all its life! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif |
Stef
I'm sorry for your loss m8. Let me know if ya get stuck for a lift or summthink. See ya soon (i hope) Paul |
Interesting this months Evo has a report on 2nd hand legacy turbos, says the turbo is good for 80k miles. Wonder if the same is true of the Impreza.
greg |
stef, last weeks(or week before) motoring news had a couple of second hand turbo units from imprezas but I can`t remember which model etc., I`ll dig out the info and let you know. Thats if you are interested in a second hand unit? One was £500 one was £750 IIRC
|
sorry to hear that stef, youve had good service from it though!!!
john, another turboless trackday nutcase http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif |
Moz,
A new VF28 (larger turbo from the Sti IV/V) costs about 750 quid, plus it's not a good idea to buy used turbos, unless they've been rebuilt, which is an expensive option on IHI Turbos... |
That's sad news Stef..
But on the positive side at least it's happened at a time when there's not much in the way of trackdays happening. Richard |
Bad news Stef http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif
3 blown turbos on Sunday then, who says bad things don't happen in threes DJ |
Stef
Bad news - look forward to CK1mk2 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif |
Thats bad news Stef...but still look on the bright side maybe you could install a higher temperature repacement turbo, as mentioned by John Felstead in previous posts, which will enable you to dump the dump valve.
|
Sorry to hear that Stef.
Perhaps we should have another Donno track day to raise funds for new turbos? Chris. |
Stef,
Sorry to hear about your loss Chris, Great idea, ten pound notes ready. The John and Stef turbo fund. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif Lee |
Tim W
The ad turned out to be for a complete engine with turbo, it was from an early wrx so no good anyway. I personally wouldn`t have a problem buying a s/h turbo,I bet most people on here have already done just that, and haven`t even seen the inside of their turbo. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif |
Moz,
A complete engine for 750 quid, now that is interesting! Hmmm power... I regularly get to see the bits that break in Turbos after the bearings let go... and I'm not impressed at their construction, unfortunately for us the manufactures normally feel that we can see too many faults so tend to say they don't want to know http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif One day there maybe an impellor without porosity...well we can dream... |
