M and S food
 

Its annoying but, why is it that much better than any of the other supermarkets ?

Its more expensive than standard supermarket stuff but not than the posh ranges , but it is always spot on.

I get the impression that a lot of food companys make stuff to a recipe and rarely taste it themselves yet M and S actually get someone to eat it.

It annoys me as its so bloody Middle Class and smug shopping at M and S, I am not Socialist but it makes me queasy shopping there among the ranks of women in X5's and RR Sports that appear to have sod all better to do than spend all day in the place.

Why cant the other supermarkets get anywhere near ?

Edited to add, trying to cook more myself these days to avoid M and S and other ready meal type things.

Youre right about the quality of the food, the other mainstream supermarkets dont come close. Ive just had M&S Chicken Kievs :D with brocoli in stilton

I baked one for about 150 miles the other day coming home from work.

When I got home, it wasn't just a dump, it was an M&S dump :notworthy .

I agree and because of that stigma i avoid it.Sainsburys is the next in line but still as a middle class image and prices to match.Usually shop at Asda or Morissons but the food is definetly of a lower standard.If you ever go to netto they make you feel like a chav/thief with all the bluddy iron work and cages

I try and avoid ready meals but if I'm going to have one it'll be M and S, no others. I'll often take one for lunch at work, as the canteen there is sh1te!
Added benefit is that they have already removed all trans fats from their food which are very harmful.
Its not just full of tarts in 4x4s, lots of working singles who can't be bothered to cook after work but don't want some reconstituted cows testicles from Asda.

No mention of Waitrose yet ;)

In a recent survey Sainsburys was top and Morrisons bottom of the healthy food table for own labels.

my wife loves the place, I think in general that the food is overpriced, meat especially

oh and I think that it can be a bit pretentious in there sometimes

Anyone that thinks M&S is pretentious or has a "stigma" clearly has a chip on the shoulder.

What a pathetic thing to worry about.

Firstly I agree that M&S food does taste the business, but most of the gear comes from the same places as your other stores! When I was 16 I worked for a week or so temping in some egg company. Basically they made every food product you could imagine with egg in it and they supplied the food to M&S, tesco, sainsburys, etc. It was all the same stuff - just a different label!

I don't base my opinions on other people's and I don't jump on bandwagons so that I can post with an opinion.

In my opinion, it is pretentious. One of my main reasons for saying this is that it is overpriced. Mark up on simple items is such to uphold the 'pretense' of quality that M&S foods has over other suppliers, when in fact it is of similar quality (pre packed food excluded)

I know of people who also make a big thing of being able to shop exclusively at M&S (yes I know, so what), again pointing to the pretension of M&S being somewhat superior to all other shops.

Every time I see that sickly advert 'this isnt food this is M&S food' it was good at first but the advert could make a dry cheese sandwich sound as if its been invented by them....come on you M&S food fans write a good line to sell a M&S cheese sandwich

Personally I think the meat sold in supermarkets is dismal, with the exception of Waitrose, the M&S meat is much better quality. (Closer to a real butchers anyway).

Some of pre-packaged food and sandwiches will come from the same factories but it is so clear that M&S is better quality.

I still don't see what the issue is. Its up to you, if you prefer the MS cheese sandwich buy it, if you don't, buy one from somewhere else.
I'm not sure how anybody could think a high street food store is pretentious.

The only M&S I get exposed to are the ones at London's mainline stations - certainly not pretentious.

This is the same store that sells machine washable suits for £99?

Anyway, nobody does their main shop at M&S , they only buy their bits ;)

i call them the "basket brigade" have you seen them walking round m&s with there neat looking basket on there arms:lol1:

theres a definate difference between the asda/bullring market and m&s customer.

You need a shower after going into Asda.

Anyone had their new pecan and toffee tart, absolutely fantastic.

Kiwi, maybe I do have a chip, its a Gastropub chunky homefried one so I am happy.

As for it all coming from the same place, maybe the staples do such as eggs and bread but get any of the meals or desserts and it just tastes spot on, we got a Victoria sponge cake, normally if it were from tesco's I would avoid like the plauge as it tastes like its designed primairilly for shelf life/cost with taste well down the scale, the M and S one was lovely, like if you made it yourself.

Have to say that Waitrose are on a par and are less pretencious.

Also, dont shop there exclusively, just as a treat.

Marks just do one level of food, Tesco do Finest and Sainbury's do Taste the Difference, the other supermarkets should do one as well,

How about the Iceland 'Not as **** as are normal rubbish range' for starters.

Got to agree the desserts at M&S are spot on, infact I'm gonna crack open a trifle right now:D

I used to live in the Docklands where we had Asda, , a small Tesco, Waitrose and M&S.

Bulk basics usually got bought in Asda.
Stuff that needed better quality was from Waitrose (fruit and veg, meat and fish), the odd treat came from M&S but it had crap variety and we only used Tesco if it was late as everyone that shopped there hated everyone else.

I used to be a potato merchant and the quality was usually not all that different - Except Aldi/Lidl would always accept rejects!
Tesco were the nastiest alongside Sainsburys, Asda were the hardest on price, Waitrose had loads of QCing but accepted anything if they really needed it, M&S never dropped their standards but didn't shift much.

Another company built a £2m packhouse for Waitrose after scoring big business with them.
They cocked up on QCing, got binned and went bust - Happens a lot in fresh produce.

I can pretty much guarantee you have all eaten a spud that I've flogged at some stage!

Much better food - but as with all shops, use your head about what you buy there and always get yer free range meat from the local butchers.

Like 'em all M&S like a brand based mark up so make sure that you are buying solid wood for chipboard prices [to use my Ikea mindset;)]

This evening I was mostly eating M&S peanuts..They actually remove the bitter tasting little small bud thingy that sits at the bottom between both halves of the peanut:wonder:. Fab!!!

No local butchers where I am (walking distance anyway), and the Waitrose butchers really is bloody good. Had a BBQ last year... "12 steaks please"... "Sure, how thick shall I cut them?" Tasted luuurvley!!!

You buy where it's local, unless you do a £150 shop or do a Tesco internet (which we do often). Depends on how much your life is worth Vs spending time (hours!) going around a supermarket - I'd rather have my weekend thanks.

For me, I mainly cook curry, and with that I can't really taste the difference between a £1.00 breast and a £2.00 breast of chicken, once I've removed any bones and fat, it's pretty much the same. Grilled breast with a side sauce though, and Tesco's finest is good enough (or Waitrose if I can't be arsed).
