Im gettin sick of our second car (a shed of an astra sri) and im considering buying a wrx to go with the cossy 'cause they are getting so cheap now. Ive just seen an m reg red 4 door wrx with 33k miles for £7500!!!! Cant be bad can it. Im just confused as to what power theyve got as the adverts range from a claimed 240bhp to 280bhp for the wrx's. A number of adverts also claim that the car is a wrx/sti. I thought that wrx's and sti's were different cars, the sti being the better one.

Is there any problem with buying a japanese import? I know that they have 100 octane petrol in japan, if i bought a wrx import will it blow up?

Has anyone any tips as to what to look for when buying a scoob? Any common faults to look out for? Should i try for an sti rather than a wrx or is there not that much difference? what are the different trim levels available in scoobs? Ive seen one advertised with leather, is this v. rare?

Oh, yes, and whats an MY? I assume an MY00 is a yr 2000 car and an MY99 is a 99 model but whats the MY bit?

The main problem with the WRX`s is insurance.... 50 % higher than a U.K. spec car.

My MY98 cost £940 to insure, they were wanting £1500 for a "M" Reg WRX!

Insurance is not that bad on a WRX.
Mine has had most things modified in some way, a big stereo and roll cage ...

I had a WRX from owning an escort cossie, did'nt like it and went back to an escort cossie. They are excellent cars, but not my cuppa tea.

An STI is callled a WRX STI, so thats fine.

Insurance is defo. more expensive on a JAP import. If an insurance company gives you a lower quote on a jap one compared to a uk one.....check the policy!!!! The reason why they are more expensive, is because ALL SPARES, and I MEAN ALL, have to be bought through a third party as NO UK dealer will touch 'em. To get ANYTHING from a UK dealer you have to supply a chassis number......even for something as simple as an oil filter!!!!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif Spares are QUITE readily available from other sources, but it can be a problem.

As regards to having problems with IMPORTS, this has been a very controversal subject. The issue with the fueling, which CAN cause engine problems if not sorted, is only one of them. My WRX was UNICHIPED, exhaust and filter and it NEVER had det and was VERY reliable. Some people with standard imports get det even with octane booster, and some dont!!!

The to's and fro's are many......your best bet is to search on this website for issues that have been debaited in the past.

im not going from a cossy to a scoob, im getting the scoob to complement to cossy. my girlfriend and i need 2 cars and seeing as scoobs are so cheap and so highly rated im thinking why not? Ive been in a uk scoob and it was a first rate ride. we went from leeds to alconbury and back so we went quite a distance and i loved the car all the way there and back, especially the handling and traction both in the wet and dry (it started raining on the way back and even very hard starts failed to upset the car much!!!). But im preaching to the converted 'cause you all know this!!!! The only things that put me off the car were that it wasnt very quick from 70mph upwards (especially compared to my 330bhp rwd cossy) and that the windows are a joke!!!

I just want something i can throw about come wet or dry without worrying about putting it through a hedge at a sniff of damp weather!!!

ive just read a post about a guy whos worried about piston slap developing with his scoob. Is this just a fault with the MY98 or is common throughout the range?

Bren, before I start, this is only my opinion, But I have driven an Escort cossy and 3 Sierra (all 4WD) cossys and then went and brought an import WRX (not STI) and my opinion is that I can't fault the WRX and it is a much better overall car than either of the two RS (or for that matter any other car I've drive in my job and thats been a few). Admittedly the Escort feels more of a sporty car but I prefer the relaxed round town drive of the scooby (coupled with the bulls-out foot down you can get with it) rather than the feel of having to drive hard all the time, I felt with the Escort.

Also my MY92 import has always been run on 95RON unleaded and never missed a beat even under hard, upto 6500rpm, acceleration.

Ya best bet is to drive some.

p.s. almost forgot Try 'A-Plan' for Import insurance (£850 modded WRX, 28yrs old, Full N/C) and Try Scoobysport for Spares (which you shouldn't need any of anyway. Its a Subaru)
