DCCD installation on a 95 WRX

Looking into installing a DCCD into a 95 WRX, which will be running around 330bhp... what all is needed?

1. DCCD Gearbox (5 Speed)
2. Neetronics PDC-01 DCCD Controller. Do I still need a "DCCD ECU" if I get this? Thinking of going for an Apexi Power FC and Commander from Andy F... is this compatible with DCCD?
3. Don't care about the dash display
4. Will I need a new rear diff? Currently got an LSD, not sure if it's 160 or 180...
5. Approximate cost?

Cheers

Just done this very mod.

The Neetronics unit is all you need. It is a substitue for the stock ecu for the dccd (which i used).

I didn't bother with the dash lights either.

All the rear diff needs to be is compatible with the box final drive ratio (ie 3.9/4:111/4:444 etc).

Costs:

Gearbox about £450
Neetronics about £250
Other bits to do the wiring etc £15

Look at #854 onwards (page 30 I think)

Cheers... what gearbox did you go for?

RA Dunk 28 January 2007 06:38 PM

hmm ok im gonna be doing the same prety soon ive picked up a Spec-C 6 speed box/dccd/prop/shifter/clutch/fly, is there anything else i need apart from the Neetronics?

911 29 January 2007 07:40 AM

Is the dccd a 'dccdA'?
That 'A' denotes extra Yaw sensors used in the donar car.

I'm not too sure of my facts, so best ask Paul at Zen.

RA Dunk 30 January 2007 10:16 AM

ok no probs m8 :-)

Dragging this back up as I have another question:

Covered 70,000 miles but was reconditioned about 8000 miles ago by TEG so is in excellent working order.

This is a DCCD box but will not come with controller or switch as this is still in use on my car. Easily sorted with an after market controller that has a lot more functions such as the Neetronics one.

Fantastic acceleration from this setup and apparently good for around 400 of each.

£850

Will ship/deliver at buyers cost.

Q- Will my driveshafts (both front and rear) on my 95 JDM WRX fit this setup or will i need different driveshafts & hubs?

911 31 January 2008 07:28 AM

That number on the TY 754 box sounds like the same as mine iirc.

The shafts will pop-in no probs.

It is the REAR diff that will not fit if it is out of a Type R as that car used the R180 diff and yours is the much more common R160 (which are perfectly ok)

Or if you wanted to save a bit on the controller, a less advanced model (cant be programmed for things like handbrake on for example) can be purchased from this chap
Spiider’s DCCD Shop

I think if you want a handbrake cut out you can easily do it with this controller anyway with extra wiring as explained in the FAQ's. Its £100 for the manual controller delivered.

He also makes an auto controller which is supposed to be able to lock the diff on the fly depending on grip levels, if it does what it says then its a very good peice of kit for the early DCCD boxes which did not have an auto setting as standard.

the_msp 31 January 2008 05:31 PM

Thanks

It's a R180 rear diff that comes with it ^, I take it the R180 diff accepts a different prop shaft than the R160? And I would also need if installing the R180 diff, Type R rear driveshafts and hub's?

911 31 January 2008 05:53 PM

No, the prop will fit, you do need the other parts though if you can get them.

the_msp 31 January 2008 09:59 PM

Ok, thanks... another question (sorry!)

What is my current split ratio rear/front i.e 50/50, 60/40 on my wrx?

What is the split ratio of the DCCD without a controller fitted?

I can use my current ABS sensors for DCCD sensors, correct? ABS will not work with DCCD even if you installed a 2nd set of sensors one set for ABS one for DCCD?

Reading that again, does that mean I can actually retain my current R160 diff, as I am now aware the prop shaft will fit both? Or is the type R gearbox a different ratio and that is the clashing factor, i.e different to 4.44 which goes with a 4.11 rear diff...

911 31 January 2008 10:25 PM

You are now finding out why this swop is a bitch!

The neetronics copes with the ABS. I removed mine completely (not an easy task).
You can simply pull the ABS fuse to 'remove' it with dccd.

The rear diff MUST be the same ratio as the box. The V5 dccdTypre R is 4:444 the same as my Sti V3 so i was lucky, and have an R160 diff in the back.

On the road i drive the car with the diff fully open and it is great. This is the same as driving the gearbox without controller at all!

However: when racing the diff comes into it's own.

I would still invest in a Neetronics though there are now others, and a new one from Whiteline (as in brand new).

Remember the Jap boxes for the classics have the 1:1 drop gears so the front fdiff ratio is the same as the rear. Do not buy a UK rear diff.

Your box is a 4:444 as your code is the same as mine, thus the rear diff must be the same, 4:444. I think your WRX diff will be a 4:111 so no good.

You can get a visc LSD R160 4:444 from several sources as they are quite common: David Welcome to the API website has stacks of them.

the_msp 01 February 2008 12:18 AM

By "copes with the ABS", do you mean I have the option of keeping ABS with DCCD if I choose the Neetronics unit?

I currently have a 4.11 standard wrx rear diff (in the shed) and installed in the car a 4.11 viscous LSD. When I remove my TY752 wrx box to sell it, I could sell it with the 4.11 standard rear diff as a package, and possibly P/X my 4.11 visc R160 rear diff for a R160 4.44 Visc rear diff... which would save me sourcing and installing shafts and hubs for the R180 that comes with what I may buy ^

Thanks again

Pop onto the site Product and you will read everything it does inc the brakes and handbrake. The site is really good.

I was looking at one about a year ago, and at that time they were about to launch a new version so things have probably moved-on now.

iirc, Stephen Darly (owns a mega Wagon / 600 bhp etc/dccd) still has his abs connected using a stock ECU.

On the diff side, have a chat with David at API.

YHPM

the_msp 01 February 2008 05:26 PM

After receiving Jay's PM, I now have several options

1. Keep my current setup, but uprate the gears with PPG in my TY752 housing. No DCCD.

2. Buy the setup listed in post #7. TY754 DCCD box which should be good for at least 350/350 if not 400/400. If I broke the gears I could uprate to PPG.

3. Buy what Jay is offering - a '95 STi RA TY752VB3EA.
3.9 front diff, gear ratios 3.454 2.333 1.750 1.354 0.972
With DCCD, 1:1 drop gears. I would need a new R160 rear diff or I could get my current Visc LSD converted to the correct matching ratio.

4. Jay might sell the centre diff seperate. As it is from a TY752 casing, I could fit it to my current box, and uprate the gears. This would give me a TY752 DCCD box, 4:111, with strong PPG gears.

When buying PPG gears, are there different ratio's to choose from for different gearing?

EDIT: Jay has just PM'd me informing me he has sold the centre diff seperate to someone else... so disregard 3 & 4

1
What are you going to do with the car? Road/ road-race/race-road?

My Sti is in option 3, race -road in that order, hence the dccd/lsd's etc.
2
If race is planned (ie track days and 350 x 350 to 380 x 380) then go for the Type R dccd.
3
If more power now or in the future then stock TY 752 box with PPG and billet forks (there are a range of ratio's and designs available)

In my experience messing with the dccd on the road does little other than push you to driving so hard to find a dccd benefit will end in a crunch or worse.

with the non dccd/ppg geared box get a correct rear diff with a plated LSD, about £350 rebuilt, and the transmission will be just bomb proof, esp with a good clutch. It will take 'any torque' an Impreza can muster and will keep it's value really well helping to justify the £3K bill.

4
The other option is a 6 speed conversion....slick change/bomb proof/£2K but you will need the right R160 diff and be careful of the front drive shaft fitments. Oh, and the extra 30Kg weight.

the_msp 01 February 2008 06:06 PM

To begin with, sprint's, starting in 2009. Car will be mainly built this summer, but some items like brakes, due to cost, will be added later in 08 or early 09. Probably more Road-Race to begin with, to get used to the general handling of the car. I have no track experience barr 1 track day in a 1.2 Nova, so starting in an Impreza is probably jumping in at the deep end, but WTH :)

The V5 type R box sounds like a good option as

a) it is in a '754 casing
b) it's gears are stronger than my current wrx ones and thus I should not at this stage need PPG
c) it has DCCD

Jay m A 01 February 2008 09:09 PM

Yeah sorry about that msp ,no activity for my box for weeks, then half an hour after PM'ing you I sell the DCCD.

Just to throw in another option, since you mention PPG then below that budget is a 6 speed box, again converting your rear diff to suit. Only thing extra is the linkage and auto propshaft.

the_msp 01 February 2008 09:53 PM

No probs Jay

I'd like to stay 5 speed for now. This isn't an "open cheque adventure", but the difference between £2k and £3k is relatively insignificant IYSWIM. For this upgrade phase (which is actually phase 2 for me) I'll be lucky to see change from £10k. Phase 3 will be an engine rebuild for 400/400...

I havn't got the cold this winter, I've got the modding bug :)

911 01 February 2008 10:56 PM

Oh...I got that in 1968 when I modded my Lambretta (there is a joke in there if you are slightly old enough)

No cure. :norty:

the_msp 02 February 2008 12:25 AM

Eh no...

I was born in the 80's ;)

911 02 February 2008 08:21 AM

Still no cure esp if you catch the Bug young!

He still has the wagon but I have his dccd & diff ecu etc now! It's in my car (P1) with 4.44 diffs including the R160 suretrac rear diff and ABS, which still seems to work as per normal despite severe provocation in the wet a few times (on a private road).

AFAIK Stephen has a modena tarmac centre diff now

911 03 February 2008 10:46 PM

Bet he breaks that too!
:D

Fat Boy 04 February 2008 10:46 AM

Harsh,.....but probably fair

I'm just waiting for this dccd to die after suffering 600bhp through it....
