Detailing GB - first week report

Hi guys

I just thought I'd post up some of the work that we got through when I came down to wales and met some of you guys. This GB was arranged by kev and facilitated by Yan and these two guys made it happen. It was a great week for me and as I have already said - I made some really good friends!

First up was yans car (aka milfhunter)

Less than a thousand miles on this monster, however already showing the scars of a poor preparation from the supplying dealer. :nono:

heres a pic of the bonnet after the wash process was completed! it shows the full extent of the poor paint quiality

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1484.jpg

the paint on this car was as soft as butter and I had to be really gentle with it - employing a technique called the 'slow cut' where you work the paint on a slow rpm, continually lubeing the pad to reduce heat build up and prolonging the work time of the product - I used menzerna FF for this, mid cut megs pad and makita rotary, finally cleaning up with a Poreter cable with sonus paint cleanser

Heres a 50:50 of work in progress
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1485.jpg

and heres the finished bonnet - note the clarity in the reflections - greatly improved and damage free

after

and heres a few finished shots - looked a lot better in the flesh though!

Next up was Kevs stunning lotus elise.

When he rolled up, my first impression was that the car would need little work as it looked great.

heres a pre wash pic

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1560.jpg

However upon closer inspection we noticed some pretty bad defects, and knowing lotus paint is as hard as nails, me and kev got stuck in.

heres some light swirling combined with a few deep scratches

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1564.jpg

heres a nasty defect too

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1568.jpg

heres the finished repair on the above

heres a bonnet shot

heres a close up of the rear wing - previously badly marked

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1572.jpg

all in all kev car looked amazing - especially when we finished it with a hand applied high grade Swissvax carnauba

Next was paul - aka NocatSTI

lovely example, thing was at this point my camera was running low on batteries so I was limited to pics, lets just say there were plenty of swirls to correct! Paul helped out and really enjoyed getting involved. top man - perhaps he can post up some finished pic from home?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1598.jpg

and after

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...1/DSCN1606.jpg

Pauls car looked really really good and it was great to work with such a nice fella!

Next was Pippyripps car - WR blue like pauls, however this one a a toughie - my goodness it was probably the worst swirling in places i had ever seen - all thanks to the previous owner from whom rob bought the car - we wasted no time and got at it - heres some swirly shots - they looked even worse in the flesh let me tell you! rob was really keen to get things looking spot on and after we both stet to work then things strted to get close to perfection. rob was a top fella and it was a pleassure to meet him

Rob has already posted pics of this car so please see other thread, however heres a few tasters

The last detail was a collegue of Yan's who owns a lovley Jag XK

Following the was, the car was inspected and instead of the swirling i just found isolated marks and a few scratches. This allowed me to do spot repairs. As The details was a little less involved that previous then it allowed me to complete a full detail including the interior. I also had chance to treat the car with a new product I am trialling to offer customers long term protection inside and out with 6 year guarantee too! Its called Zirconite, similar ethos to the existing product like permaguard and diamondbrite etc, however this stuff is really easy to use and the final finish was really impressive too!

absolute stunning results.

Matt, can you give any tips to the guy who washes the car in the driveway?

Like, what to use (not too expensive, off the shelf stuff)
certain techniques to keep paint(especially new paint) looking fresh?
and most important...
WHAT NOT TO USE!

thanks.

stellaholic 28 January 2007 11:49 PM

Those are outstanding results i must say. Can I get an assesment on my car? I have some seriously bad swirling on my roof and bonnet. Im sure this was from auto glym when i done it in the summer and it looks awfull. Was going to give it a try with some different polishes to see if it made any difference but not got around to it yet.

Simon
