Cramp, whats that all about ?

Don't get it very often, I am talking about the debilitating leg cramp, you know when you stretch and the muscles goes mad, you end up hopping about.

I get it sometimes in my calf muscles when I stretch in bed, really spoils a lie in that, having to get out of bed and hop around whilst going ow, ow ow, and once notably it happened in a meeting at work, difficult trying to remain composed so just sat there thrashing my legs and gurning like Joey Deacon.

Have had it at the gym in my stomach muscles after doing sit ups.

Today, all day , I have been digging a 700 mm (building regs) deep trench across the garden, about 30 metres to put electrics into my new shed, so have been doing more physical stuff than I ever normally do, hence why my thigh muscle went into cramp when I treid to sit cross legged for a go on the 360 , I reacted to this sudden pain by tensing up, causing me to fart loudly, launching myself backwards only to **** my head with the kind of force you only get when not anticipating a sofa in your trajectory.

Now my wife had been watching casualty and was engrossed in that but I managed for the first time ever to distract her with the ow, parp, thud, ow, ow and then hopping around the living room going F*ck, F*ck, F*ck.

Cramp is absolutely vile. I got it the other night, same as you, stretching in bed. My calf muscle. Had to jump out of bed and put my foot on the cold floor (old wives tale but seems to work) and try to stretch it out.Pure agony. And boy, does it still ache the next day :( :(

It didn't cause me to fart loudly tho' :lol1:

FPMSL!!!

Janspeed 27 January 2007 10:21 PM

Eat bananas and do some stretches every now and then.

The bananas have a bunch of properties that help maintaining the muscles healthy.

richiewong 27 January 2007 10:22 PM

Google lactic acid.

J4CKO 27 January 2007 10:22 PM

Janspeed, funnily enough I eat a Banana most days and have started doing some stretches in the morning !

dpb 27 January 2007 10:24 PM

lack of salt ...?

unclebuck 27 January 2007 10:25 PM

Usually the result of dehydration:

How can leg cramps be prevented?
  • Stay Hydrated
It is not well known exactly how dehydration and muscle cramping are related, but it is known that dehydration can predispose to leg cramps. Drink at least three full glasses of water each day, including one before bedtime. Also drink plenty of fluid before, during, and after exercise.
:)

Lee247 27 January 2007 10:26 PM

I just put it down to lying in an odd position in bed :lol1:

J4CKO 27 January 2007 10:26 PM

I do try to not eat salt but I dont think its that, I think its down to 12 months of physical activity in one day. Same again tommorow !

J4CKO 27 January 2007 10:26 PM

And have nailed several glasses of water and a few of Diet Coke.

unclebuck 27 January 2007 10:27 PM

You need to drink at the time of the excursion, not after the cramp occurs... ;)

its not lactic acid it was at first thought to be latic acid but it called doms and its caused my small tears in the muscle fibres when doing exercise or actions your body isn't use to.

Coke contains caffine mate, that is a dieuretic and will dehydrate you further. Just stick to the water!

Yes, and the weird thing is, you know it's going to happen and you can't stop it :(

dpb 27 January 2007 11:12 PM

You jus have to stretch your leg out striaght and pull on your toes for calf cramp.,!

Fuzz 27 January 2007 11:26 PM

It's the Potassium in Bananas that help stave off cramp..

As scuba divers we use them before a dive to help the old calf muscles, as they get abuse from the amount of finning you have to do (if the current is running). :D

I went to watch the mighty saints the other day and one of our players was getting attention for cramp. Someone in the crowd told him to drink more beer, as he hardly ever gets cramp and drinks lods of the stuff.

Made me laugh anyway.

davegtt 28 January 2007 12:34 AM

I suffer with this, sadly only since my bad road smash back in 1996, I can be sound asleep one minute and hopping round the bedroom like someone has stuck a red hot poker up my ar4e, also both my ankles lock up as well:(
Cheers
Colin
