Our Rhodesian Ridgeback Pup - Simbah (Pics)
 

Well we have had him 2 weeks now and it took him all of 5 minutes to settle into his new home. He is still a bit of a 'nipper' but he is getting better every day. I am planning on a clicker based training method and the clicker turned up this morning.

I can safely say he has given no cause for concern (but I wish he would hold his ears like a Ridgeback should :) I keep threatening to get a stockinette and leave it on for a month ;)

Our very well trained 6 month old black lab has obviously eaten something pretty nasty.

Woke up this morning a little nervous (bit of crop spraying yesterday from her) and got hit by a wave of aroma du merde.

Opened the door of her room (about 8x10ft tiled utility room) and there was complete carnage. She even managed to spray two foot up the wall in places, covered the washing machine and tumble dryer and blitzed the whole room.
Wife and I had to wear scarves when clearing so we didn't throw up.

So it's 24 hours of no food for her (seems very cruel).

Anyway, here she is and fingers crossed for tonight...

By all means try utilising the clicker for training but make sure you're trained how to use it first as they're not as easy as they look and Ridgebacks have a knack for differentiating between the click and food reward as opposed to the click and praise reward - i.e no food = refusal to co-operate. I've tried it on several and never succeeded.

How old is he? Looks a bit scrawny.

Lovely dog :)

She does rather like drinking water from dodgy puddles and proudly bringing us fox turds.

Can't find the section in the puppy training book for avoiding it...

Vets tomorrow if not better - The pleading looks I'm getting from her today for food are heart breaking :cry:

Our black lab is currently curled up on the bed looking outside at the other dogs being dragged out for walk when it's -25 (with windchill) outside.

poor doggy hope it feels better soon we give our dog mixer as it makes her more solid i cant stand the smell of dog pooh its rancid lmao :)

Did you 'buy' or adopt the Ridgeback?

Our little miss once ate a pillow and when it came out the other end........well lets just say that I know what it feels like to have 'turd' 6ft up the walls!!

He was advertised as for sale but we just settled on covering the cost of his food etc...

If you need to rehome your pup (for whatever reason) then a responsible person should not really be financially motivated IMHO. This was the case with his owner who was very genuine and very upset.

Started some basic clicker training last night and it took him all of 2 minutes to get the hang of it.

Tony - Really shout "Ow" or "NO" when he bites - Loud enough to distress him a little and do it every time without fail.

They soon get the message.

Beautiful dogs - the best there is IMO. Had one in Australia for 4 years since a pup and she was stolen which was heartbreaking.

Very smart dogs, but with an independant streak.

Would love one again but due to the small living area in the UK I can't be so cruel as to get one.

Kiwi - Dog stolen - That's nasty.

We (my parents) lost a lovely six year old Collie. Very handsome dog and super bright but disappeared one day.
We're convinced he was pinched too but never found out what really happened.

Gutted.

Our boy decided to throw up at 5.00 am this morning :Whatever_

Ours was definitely pinched - we had two dogs a Cocker Spaniel (girlfriends) and they virtually ripped off the garage door to get through to the back yard, Spaniel was found a couple of miles away but the Ridgeback never found, even though it was chipped, collared, nametagged etc.

Nothing touched in the house or garage. Police said there was a few other dogs stolen in the area too.

She seems fine (he said nervously) - No mess at all so gave her a bit of food.

Let her out and she came back looking guilty as sin.
Opened her mouth and...

...another fox turd :eek2: :(

Hope yours is okay. Dog puke is always a bugger to clear up.

Kiwi - Very nasty. Ours wasn't valuable but just very friendly and bright.

Most dogs will just re-eat it. :)

Not mine - he just looks at it, looks at us and stands there waiting for us to clean it up :lol1:

tony, a beautiful pup! we've had our ridgeback kaya for two years now and as far as we're concerned there is no other breed to have, brilliant with kids, intelligent, great fun. they do like to get a lot of exercise...

we had a decorator come round from that part of the world about 18 months ago, who went mental when he saw kaya, saying he had a couple of them back home, i asked him in conversation what part of zimbabwe he was from he looked at me and said in that accent 'no mate, i'm not from zimbabwe, im from rhodesia..' :D

Or Lion dogs.

Had him for four years and he was the most loving and loyal dog but unfortunately he bit my Dad quite badly and had to be put down, broke my heart :( but still got good memories of him, will get the rest of the pics done soon as he was a really handsome dog and came from a good line of champion dogs.

Lovely looking ridgeback, mine is now 5 months old, and we have had her for just over 2 months. We allready have one in the family and we can tell that this one is going to be bigger. Everything is going ok untill she ate the tv remote control and memory card reader last night.

Yeah janspeed no worries, I suppose it just shows how loyal these dogs are, I was only about 11 and had broken my leg playing football so was in a full length plaster feeling sorry for myself. My dad came home from the pub one night and was having a laugh and a joke with me to cheer me up and started to tickle me as I was sitting in the armchair in the living room, obviously I was laughing and yelping like kids do and we can only think Leo mistook it for him hurting me, unfortunately my dad was kneeling down at the time and he bit him on the face, upper lip and underside of jaw, lots of blood. As soon as he bit him Leo stood in the corner with his ears back and tail between his legs, it was as if he knew what he had done. My dad never blamed the dog for what happened but we just couldnt take the chance with me and my little friends running about all the time so we had to have him put down :(

Folks have never had another pet since because of the heartache and that was over twenty years ago. They are stunning dogs tho, but they definately give you a look when you tell them to do something that says: "I dont want to, but seeing as its you......!"

Ps when you buy a KC registered pup how far back does their family history go? Would be intrerested to know if there are many dogs out there that are his descendants, as he was sired out a few times,his pedigree name was Red Bravo he had about 17 champions in his family tree, the one we have goes back to his great granparents.

i have history going back about 5 generations, im sure the breeders goes back a lot further.

That is a real shame.......Sorry that this may sound out of context, but could you have not have handed him to a "foster home" or some other family?

I guess nowadays things have changed and there are new ways of re-educating animals after situations like that.

I do understand your parents concerns, and I guess that animals are animals and they will always react in the way they are meant to.

To be honest dont know if that was an option that was explored or not at that time, as you say things have changed since those days (early 80's), the pull of getting a dog is getting strong for me now tho! Must resist but its hard!
