Sky Broadband Router question
 

looking at various posts I see it's a Netgear wireless router you get with Sky.

my question is can you still get into the settings to assign static ip's to attached devices and change the SSID and the likes ?

I don't think so, but I don't have one and would be interested in getting the information first hand from someone who does.

The reason why I'm reasonably sure you can't is that I asked about this when Sky called me to ask if I wanted to move to Sky BB. I said I didn't want to move as I had heard that you could only access the service via thier hardware, and the hardware was not user configurable. The CS guy told me this was true, and there was nothing they could do about it. He stopped trying to sell to me at that point.

It's fully configurable.
There is also a way to get the 'hardwired' information so that you can use the login info and use a different router if you want.

it's also technically possible (though debatable on the T's&C's of the contract) to flash over the current NG firmware for the DG834GT and the extra menu items appear automagically.

I have. It is possible to end up with a bookend though.

The only 'missing' items in the sky firmware are the login details , so all normal menu items remain accessible and configurable.

I can email you the netgear configuration utility where you can do various tweaks etc

Do they not check the MAC address of the router?

Can you PM me details on how to do this? I assume you can't just use the Router Upgrade option from the menu.

Right ended up signing up with Sky broadband. I have a 360 linked to my current Netgear DG834G wifi router. I went to check something on the net this morning and although the router said it was connected when I logged in I couldn't access any sites. Is this because they have already transfered the service and if so can I get the new login details and use my current router or do I have to use the Sky one?

Will phone tonight when I have time but will probably get more sense here

Reset the router and go through the connection wizard to set up the correct settings, and add your new username/password.

Assuming you have received these.

I think you need to set up your old router to use the MAC-address of your new Sky one (which is also your Sky username).

Backup your router settings, then edit the file to contain the following:

#< Router MAC Address >
# MAC address
[20701]"Use This MAC Address"=aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff

inserting your MAC address instead of the letters a-f.

Then reload it into your router and reboot.

This is assuming that you have managed to get your Sky username and password out of your Sky router

don't have the Sky router. Was told there would be no interruption to the service when swapping over. UKonline who I was with stopped the service yesterday morning. Sky now tell me I wont be connected until the 11th April!

I'm ready to kick off but want to know if I could use my current Netgear router if they provide the required login and password? and obviously provide a connection.

isn't sky broadband using ukonline stuff since sky bought them up?

Sky bought EasayNet not UKOnline as far as i am aware?

the unbundled Sky broadband is an expanded easynet LLU service.

You can use your current linksys STi , but they won't give you your username/password - you have to 'obtain' this from the supplied router. No need for mac address spoofing, connection is username/password verified only.

Well all is not going well..... I should have listened I know!

No router as yet and speaking ot them last night been told I cant move from Ukonline to Sky using a MAC code. So two weeks and they tell me this. I think it's bull**** but speaking to somebody with a brain at Sky is half the battle.

this industry needs some regulation!

Isnt it funny... all isp's were told they must now give out mac codes within 5 days on request, but some are actually cancelling the service instead, (almost like sour grapes)

I had the same when migrating from tiscali to aol...

so thats wanadoo, & tiscali who were usless when it came to it.....Aol need to improve there customer service too ;)
