Alternator whine
 
Evening all.just wondering is this a life or death condition.does it need my immeadiate attention or is there anything i can do to to solve the problem.PS any ideas why my car has just developed piston slap would changing to duckhams 5w 40 from mineral oil cause this:thanks mal

First thing to do is remove the drive belt and see if this gets rid of the noise. I thought my alternator was giving up the ghost and after removing the belt the noise was still there. So after removing the AC belt the noise disappeared, checked the pulleys and found that the tensioner pulley bearings were shot, £30 instead of a few hundred. Worth a try before splashing out on a alternator.

might also be power steering pump whining, mine was. fixed it by draining fluid and refilling !! £4 fix
