Noisy engine when cold
Hi All,
Have just joined Scooby net after searching the net & think it is full of really good info. l have a UK 99 turbo with 48,000 on the clock, have had it for 4 years & constantly puts a smile on my face. Car has a FSH from Bell & Colvill (Guilford), although it has just been serviced l have noticed that it is a bit clattery when cold but after 4-5 miles quietens down & purrs like they should do. l,m guessing that it is lack of oil to a tappet bucket (or whatever the have) Any idea's if it can be cured or is it a major engine job. Thanks in advance |
Sounds to me like good old piston slap. As long as the noise goes, then I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't drive it on boost until properly warmed up.

Could be the cam belt tensioner. It's quite common for these to become noisey on MY99/00 (and even newer).
The plungers can start to fail and the belt goes slightly slack overnight. The tapping sounds is the tensioner bouncing as it re-primes. |
I get it a bit on MY00 car.
Tis normal so I hear from people on here and my local subaru specialist. As long as its gone by the time the car warms up it shouldnt be a problem. Still a little annoying though. |
Mines the same, even though i know its piston slap it still gets me worrying sometimes:freak3:
If i got a £1 everytime ive popped the bonnet after ive warmed her up to check theres no knocks id be rich LOL...:lol1: |

Yes it did!
Just not official confirmed by subaru! |
mine does it aswell - MY98 turbo - not too bad but worse when very cold outside - dissapears when engine warms up - presumed its piston slap as i've read on here many times
