Pre-V-Power, optimax, Ultimax etc?

Before all these performance fuels were readily available on the market what did people do with performance cars and jap imports?

I cant believe everybody used octane boost all the time.

Elmer Fudpucker 09 January 2007 10:31 PM

If you're as old as me then it was 5 star:)

Ray_li 09 January 2007 10:48 PM

I remember my dad using 5 star :D

ex-webby 09 January 2007 10:50 PM

They did nothing, but they wondered why the cars blew-up! :D

cookstar 09 January 2007 10:50 PM

Quite! :)

I don't think I could buy one unless I had some kind of proof that a) the owner had always used OB b) It had been properly remapped for UK fuel straight away!

donnas roo 10 January 2007 01:46 PM

I use the higher grade fuel all the time on my 03 sti type uk, but i still put the booster in on every 3rd full tank.
Doesn't seem any better though !!!!!!

Ray_li 10 January 2007 02:33 PM

what about countries that have even crapper fuel?

What octane rating to the US have?

Janspeed 10 January 2007 02:39 PM

They use water with drops of oil in it!!

That fuel must be great to use on high spec cars! NOT

They have really sucky RON, that is one of the reasons why most of their cars (with very few exceptions) take 6 weeks to get from 0 to 60, and just generally suck.

briforbes 10 January 2007 02:41 PM

Actually....the US RON rating is calculated in a different way to ours, so a low figure of say 90 RON might be similar to our super unleaded.

Janspeed 10 January 2007 02:46 PM

How so? Thought it was more or less calculated like we do it over here.

You don't need to use OB on a UK STi. It was just the latter classic STis that were set up to run on 100 RON that weren't happy on SUL without OB over here.

Your UK STi will only advance ignition so far; any increses in octane above and beyond that will have no effect on performance. If you're already using 99 octane, that will be more than sufficient (unless the car has been re-mapped for higher).

I'd save your money on the OB. Maybe a splash on hot days, or if you plan to use the car on track for extra resistance against DET, but that's about it.

I'm a far cry from that old man...I'm a "real" engineer, he just has one of those mickey mouse degrees bought cheap from one of them dodgy American diploma sites. ;)

UK cars are mapped for UK fuel :D So 95RON perfectly safe in a standard non-ppp UK car.

There was a reason why the UK model classic shape Imprezas were detuned to 208/215ps instead of (later) JDM's 280ps ;)

In the days before super unleaded people simply didn't buy Japanese imports. They only became popular in the late 90's because super was available and so businesses sprang up to handle the importing of Jap motors. Previously it had all been personal imports - handled personally by the buyer - and these were a rare sight on our roads.
