Laptop for gaming

I want a laptop for gaming, don't want anything too fancy as I only want it for the odd LAN occasion against another player on my PC.

I play BF 2, BF 2142 on my PC so this is the sort of game I want to be able to run.

I'm not worried about it running it flat out on high res as on my PC I run BF at low on all settings.

What I'm getting at is I want to spend as little as poss :D would go for something 2nd hand on ebay or new maybe.

Has anyone any advice?

Alienware: Compare All Notebooks!

Was looking at Rock, look good value compared to the Alienware ones (which seem a bit like you're paying for the name?)

I have an Alienware desktop PC and it rocks :norty:

If I wanted gaming on the move then I would definitely buy an Alienware Laptop :D

I wouldn't. I used to have one of their gaming laptops and it was utter rubbish. Nowhere near as good / reliable as the Dell XPS I replaced it with (after only a year). Their tech support was pretty useless as well. They've been bought by Dell now though, so they may have improved.

I was just going to ask the same question as I'm looking at laptops at the moment. I looked at Dell and Alienware earlier but I'd never heard of 'Rock' before now.

The Rock Pegasus 665-T76 looks extremely good spec for the money, I think I'll be ordering that as soon as they start shipping them with Vista pre-installed. :)

I've had an Alienware laptop for 2 years now and it's the nuts for gaming. I cannot fault the quality and amazing speed of the thing.
Dell have bought a stake in Alienware recently, but I can honestly say that Alienware are still making THE BEST gaming laptops as always.

Mine wasn't. I've thrown it away now, but I had no end of trouble with it. Dodgy power supply, USB ports stopped working, and Alienware refused to even try and support it once the 1 year warranty period was up. You've only got to browse the various forums out there, (even Alienware's own support site) to see quite a few people who've had the same problems with that model.

I've currently got one of their desktops, and (so far) it's been a great, reliable machine. The laptop was utter rubbish by comparison. I wouldn't even consider getting another one (once burnt and all that)...

Another vote for Rock! :notworthy

a Dell D620 2Ghz 2gig ram widescreen wxga screen works a treat

Iwan 10 January 2007 01:33 PM

Just spoken to Rock, they'll be taking orders for laptops pre-installed/pre-built with MS Vista from 31st Jan onwards (as opposed to MS XP with free upgrade to MS Vista later). No upgrade worries doing it that way.

So I'll almost certainly be ordering a sparkly new Peg 665-T76 at the end of the month. :)

Just out of interest, which XPS did you go for and did you make any customisations? :)

I've got an XPS Gen2, (had it almost 2 years now). The processor is getting a bit old for the most recent games, but it still does a good job with pretty musch everything else. Solid as a rock as well :)

jameswrx 10 January 2007 06:02 PM

Right..

Ordered a Rock P665-T72 with upgrade screen, faster HD and windows xp media. £1048

But..

Remembered my brother in law bought a cheap laptop. Didn't really think a lot of it until I just looked at the spec when I got home a min ago.

Have a look..

PC Nextday

£699

Looks pretty much the same spec apart from the graphics card and it has wireless :(

I can't find anything on comparing the graphics cards but I'm worried now lol (nervously)

Have I made a mistake? One thing I would say is the screen on his is a little strange whereas the illumination comes through in strips and it's quite clearly brighter in some places than others.

kbsub 10 January 2007 06:09 PM

The Rock as built in wireless and a better graphics card , although Im not sure how much better , it also as a far better warranty , one thing that swung it for me.
ask here as well.

jameswrx 10 January 2007 06:59 PM

Ah that's ok then :) I didn't see that it had wireless (didn't cross my mind at the time) but just checked and you're indeed correct.

If the graphics card is better then I'll be happy.

What would be your worry with upgrading just out of interest?

I have ordered mine and obviously I will only be upgrading when I can.
