Is'nt it a bit stupid to have certain places on a car where the tracker will be fitted?
Why doesnt the installer put it where he feels like? The whole idea of a tracker is that it stays with the car, otherwise, any thief will look in usual place, remove tracker and off they go,leaving the police tracking a box sitting in the gutter! I know a car is only so big,and there is only a number of places possible to hide something, but come on,drug smugglers manage it,maybe we should hire them to fit our security devices. Its like the saying 'send a thief to catch a thief.' steve [Edited by stevie c - 12/1/2001 1:49:35 PM] |
MY02 due in Feb. I plan to have a tracking device fitted regardless of what the insurance say - I've worked hard and waited a long time for this car and I don't plan to let some prat take it.
I noticed that, on some tracking device websites, they do not put stickers in the window to state that one has been fitted, on the basis that it is not a deterent. Is this true ? Surey, if every Subaru that came into the UK had a Tracker fitted, it would no longer be the fist choice for theives. In fact, they would keep well away. So, if I fit a device would'nt I be better off advertiseing it ? Comments please. |
No - by advertising it, you give somone the chance of locating the tracker (and removing/disabling) before taking your vehicle. Usually the only vehicles that advertise a tracking device, are ones that don't have them. If they don't know it's fitted and they take the car, you've more chance of getting it back, as hopefully the police will be on to them without them realising.

yes totally agree the tracker is not a visible deterant it is a means of getting it back once it's taken & if the tea leaf knows it got 1 he aint guna wana leave it there!
Get a disk lock as a deterant:) Si |
Agree with last two posts :D
Nothing more to add :D |
I think there are standard places to install the tracking device. By advertising which one you have, they can look in those places as soon as they get the car and strip it out!
It's not really a detterent, but you will probably get your car back in one piece should the worse happen! Hope this helps Andy |
No, for exactly the reasons above. As they say, use a diskloc or something similar.

I've just had a guy come to replace the RAC tracker unit on my car (old software on the unit apparently). It took him over an hour to find the thing - with telephone support.
Felt quite happy about that one, seeing as though he was the service engineer and all! There are the best part of 30 odd places they can put it. He did leave me a squeak in the car when he'd finshed though - took most of it apart to find the thing!!! |
I hear what you are saying, but, if the theif knew for certain that a tracker device was fitted surely, they would move on to the next car that doesn't have one.
A lot of people are put off buying Subaru's because of the much higher than average chance of it being stolen. Surely, if Subaru UK fitted them as standard, each placed radonmly in one of the 30 or so places they can be located, the message would get around very quickly in the underworld and they would go back to stealing warmed up Fords and Jags (same thing really). |
but why would u want your car back, if some B*stard has ragged it to pieces?
|
Not ideally but it's better than a heafty insurance claim!:p

I spoke to a young scrote who was a self-professed car thief when I got my 205GTI several years ago. He advised me that as soon as you display what kind of alarm (now immobiliser, tracker) you have, that tells the thief what technique to use to disable it. Said the best thing was to buy a cheap LED and plug it in somewhere, so the thief thinks something's fitted but doesn't know what.
Quite like James Bond's old "Warning; Anti-theft Device Fitted", which appeared to be linked to a couple of kilos of semtex... BJH |
how big or small is the tracker device?
|
well when they carried out maintainence on my tracker when i got the car it was a fair bit smaller than say a video tape, although they may b smaller now as that was a few years old.

Rac device fitted as standard on P1 model.
Why not all turbo models? Matthew |
yeah the trackster but then scoobs have always bin criticised 4 having crappy security:S:(
Si |
I dont think you should let the scumbags know its there. As long as the tracking device is proactive, you should get both your and in some cases, other peoples car back.
|
I had a dream about my Scoob being stolen and then crashed last night. Truly sick nightmare of a young kid that kept going back to my car everytime I turned my back and eventually got the thing started and smashed it into a wall.......
....I'm gonna need councelling ;) |
