Theyre getting cheaper because most people are starting to realise how sh!te LCD's are ;) :D

MattW 05 January 2007 06:06 PM

Well I like mine :p

davegtt 05 January 2007 06:14 PM

ahhh you see, you slipped up, should have got a plasma :lol1:

falkster 05 January 2007 07:47 PM

They are very poor quality ones though to be fair!!!

Contrast of 800:1 and veiwing angles of 170 degress is very poor indeed and the resolution on both is shocking!!! Be worse than buying a 14 inch from Asda for 50 quid

For only a few hundred quid more you can get one with contrast of 8000:1 etc

CoobyS 05 January 2007 07:52 PM

There is a 50" LG Plasma going for £1150 - most cheap online stores and comet are doing it...

dogboy1 05 January 2007 07:52 PM

I cant believe how cheep they are geting. i reckon this time next year you will get a decent one for about £450 notes!!

LOL so you'd wait a full year to save £110 notes? just get one now....lol

MattW 06 January 2007 04:07 PM

Ah but he said decent!!

pslewis 06 January 2007 04:13 PM

Yesterday I went into my local dealers to look at the SONY LCDs (AGAIN!) - I hope and hope that there will be some breakthrough in these large screen TVs that will show me they are better than a £50 SecondHand CRT.

Again I left amazed at how ****E they are!! There was a normal TV picture on of the LongLeat Sea Lions in the lake ....... the water was as pixellated as anything - REALLY REALLY BAD!!! and I mean REALLY bad!

The price of the TV? £1299!! What a friggin waste of money!

GC8 06 January 2007 04:43 PM

Pete: Im amazed that you are still posting the same ignorant crap. Even the most stupid SN member knows that 'pixelated water' is f*ck-all to do with the television set.

pslewis 06 January 2007 05:08 PM

??????????????????????????????????????

All I can say is what I saw - and I saw a pixellated crap picture of the water in the LongLeat Lake!!

That is FACT!

And, amazingly, a TV is there to look at - if it is ****e to look at then it fails!!

And these big screens ARE crap - utter utter crap!!

agreed

I prefer the plasma pic.

The beauty of the lcd prices falling (as everyone jumps on the lcd bandwagon) is the plasma prices fall so they don't get left out. And then I bag a 42" Viera with stand for £830 :D

ronjeramy 06 January 2007 05:57 PM

There was a panasonic 42" lcd advertised in the paper at pc world today for£899:eek: though i didnt see what the spec was, still bloody cheap for a 42" panasonic.

For anything bigger than 32" you definately need 1080p HD. 720 is fine upto about 32", but does start to look bad on anything bigger.

Problem I've found is we need a new telly, CRTs are pretty much dead, but I've no interest in HD. So I need a tv that will look decent with normal SD freeview picture.

I'm just worried that whatever we get (32 inch) will frankly look **** with "normal" definition stuff :(

Went into comet today and bar all the lcds linked up to an HD demo the pictures looked terrible. But I've a feeling it's just the shop plonking them out with a poor feed and not setup correctly, but they really don't make you want to buy one.

Were they the samsung "slim" crts? I thought the idea of these was excellent but have heard a few stories about quality, but I'm no audio/videophile and just want something that gives me a watchable picture.

LCD TV's are getting cheaper due to the most of thye major companies being found guilty of price fixing!!!!!!!

Try going into the Sony Centre - they seem to run decent feeds on them. Sony Centre in Wycombe has a 40" LCD HD 1080p and the picture quality is stunning - best TV picture quality Ive ever seen.

Does 1080p help on a standard digital feed? ie. NOT HD?

Seamaster 06 January 2007 09:45 PM

Bought one of those "Technosonics" 37 inch LCD's from woolworths. seems ok for the money: £399. I here they have some safety issues so will wait until a great deal comes along and then return the LCD to woolworths !!

Richer sounds have got some good deal. But would only want to spend a couple of hundred more.

corradoboy 06 January 2007 09:46 PM

Everything in the major retailers is poorly set up and badly represented, but they know full well that the majority of their customers will buy any old $h!t as long as the wife agrees it will match the sofa and wallpaper. For every knowledgeable and discerning AV enthusiast there are 000's of dopey f*ckwits filling Curry's/Dixons/Comet's demographic, and so there is no reason for them to waste time and money employing/training staff to adequately demonstrate the products and their capabilities. Anyone with half an ounce of intelligence will only use such outlets to get the best price, but frequent specialists to make their judgement prior to any purchase. One has to wonder how many quality TV's are out there being run via a VHS recorder through RF :rolleyes: When you see any of the current top panels set up and presented properly using a good source and suitable cabling you can then appreciate their capabilities and how much of an improvement is available over and above broadcast material. Go spend an hour at a specialist, and do them a favour and buy from them to help keep them going, as long as they offer to match the majors prices.

Nope, 1080p is basically FULL HD;

Regular TV = 640 x 480 (pixels)
HD = 1366 x 768
1080p = 1920 x 1080

HD DVD's will have the data in 1920 x 1080 format, but standard HD TV's will downscale this image to 1366 x 768.

Anyone buying an LCD/Plasma bigger than 32" that isnt 1080p is making a mistake IMO. The improvement in quality between HD and 1080p is almost as much again as between regular TV and HD, but obviously you dont really need the extra detail unless its a big TV (over 32").
