Police speed guns in the dark ....
 

While driving home last night (a little on auto pilot I must admit :confused: ) through a 40mph zone I caught the reflection of a police car parked up ahead , I estimate I was doing about 45ish ( which is rare as I know the road and usually stick to the limit ). I slowed straight away , and the the road angel started going mad on the dash (at least I know the thing works :) ) . So I know they fired the gun at me , and I reckon by then I was well under the limit , but out of interest can the gun read my front plate with my headlights on ,or does the fact that they didn't stop me mean I don't have a surprise coming in the post

I got caught by a gun at the side of the road a few years back, and I think it actually only reads your speed, not your number plate (could be wrong?) If they didn't stop you, you must've been within the limit!
When I got caught, they had to show me the gun to show I was over the limit and it only showed the speed. There's normally an officer with the gun, and then a few yards down the road another officer waits to flag you down if your over the limit.

The gun doesn't read the plate, the bloke holding the it does ;)

You're probably ok as they'll pull you there and then more often than not.

Thanks Em , I thought it sounded a bit far fetched that they would be able to get my details just from the front without lighting up the front of my car .

they often used to park on a private track off the road where i live, was walking dog past him once and got talking lol (dont ask)

the gun need something flat and stable then it can read the speed, if your speeding he will jump out and wave you to stop then show you a still image on the gun to prove it

operates at quite a distance, but im sure they wouldnt mind a couple of mph over :)

apparently their car is meant to be visible, so they dont get accused of "sneaky speed camera'ing".... obv this one was, but in the 30 zone near me leading to motorway they often leave it on ind estate round corner and just walk to road edge with the gun - cheeky blighters lol

I heard that if its a 30mph limit, they'll turn a blind eye if your doing 31-33 odd, but could be totally wrong!! They used to hide with the gun around my way too, but they're not allowed to do that now... hence the brightly stickered up van that they now have to stand by when "trapping" motorists :D !!!

i know there are now camera vans etc that do work in the dark.

yer they are ok for an odd few mph - apparently they have to have proof their gun was calibrated before they came out too ;)

stickered vans - with onboard kettles, fridges and nice cup holders i imagine

News to me, not that im doubting it but how do you know this for sure?

well it now being winter and getting dark at like 4pm im sure police safety camera operators dont have reduced shifts - they obviously operate in the dark!

They don't always stop you, About 3 years ago I was doing 36mph in a 30mph zone naughty me, saw the filth holding the gun but it was too late he already zapped me 3 points and £150 fine.

Apparently the extra costs were because they didnt stop me (extra admin I'm not sure?).

Yes that is true sometimes but surely its about catching idiots who are blatently speeding.......discretion plays a big part but if soemones doing twice the limit then they deserve to get stuck on imo ;)

ACPO guidelines are 10% + 2 over the speed limit. It's down to the copper behind the gun tho (i've past a traffic car @ 90 on a motorway and he didn't bat an eye lid, he was hogging the middle lane :D).

Scamera partnerships and statics have there own rules tho, statics generally around that of ACPO figures, Scamera's less so.
