Washing machine selection troubles

You don't get to test drive the things!. The most important feature is how quiet it will be - but how do you find out?.

The G/F has requirements for wash cycles, spin speeds, buttons and looks.

So how quiet is quiet? No stats seem to be available.

Anyone have info on a washer drier by Hoover - Nextra 6

And before it kicks off - she won't let me help cos I always do it wrong :norty:

Dunno if it's the same with washers, but DISHwashers defo give the dB rating on a card in the stores.........

Most important thing is to set it up perfectly level with all 4 legs touching the floor. If it rocks just slightly then it will make hell of a racket when it spins. Also think about sticking it onto a solid floor and not raised. Off-balance load (not a lot you can do about this one!) will also make a racket on spinning.

IMHO they are all fairly quiet these days (major makes tha is - get a Bosche!!!) - it's the installation/operation that causes most problems.

Dave - with his machine in the utility room where the door can be shut as well!

We bought an Ariston 1600 spin wide drum etc..

it had a reported 75db operating noise...

when it first started to spin, it was like a turbine spooling up... and we thought it was a bit noisy  but thought it would settle after a few spins...

now we dont even notice it :):)

Most machines now have a jog facility, whereby they will spin the load to ascertain the balance, then stop and do a half spin the other way to shuffle the load then try again.

I had a Hoover washer/drier once and it was a total unmitigated disaster. Won't bore you with the long version but it never managed more than 3 months between repairs. IMHO washer/driers are too complicated for their own good.

I now have a Miele washer (£600) which is bomb proof, and a separate condenser drier from hotpoint which isn't.

Cheers Guys.

I may have to learn how to use this new one properly now that Santa has brought me some polishing towels!

Shark Man 04 January 2007 01:11 PM

The Meile machines are quiet and don't vibrate much on spin, not bombproof though, but they are still good. And better than likes of hoover and hotpoint et al.

ive just got a AEG one which came with a 5 yr part and labour cover.

Miele are doing a free 10 year parts and labour guarentee at the moment.

Just bought my second Bosche and have to be honest. It's quite quiet when it spins even flat out 1400 rpm. I get offended by the noise washing machines make  and most of the time don't even notice it's on ;) my first one lasted 7 years and I have got 4 kids so was on all the time.

They're a little more expensive, but well worth the extra money IMHO
