Car for the dog.
 

Right it pains me to do this but i've come to the decition that the scoob needs to go!:cry: Due to the mrs starting a new job she is unable to take the dog to the park after work for a propper walk.So i've got to change cars for something i can get the dog in the back of. Max prob 7k budget.I'll be back in a scoob in a few years i'm sure, just need somthing to tide me over till i can run 2 cars.
My thoughts so far have been

1.6 focus (seen a few 53/04 for around 6k)

Astra

Ye i did think about a wagon but there is just something about them that i don't like (no offence to wagon owners) i'd feel bad letting the muddy dog roll around in the back of a nice car. I'd rather by a cheap run around like a focus.Couldn't care less if that got messed up then in a couple of years get meself a nice sti 9 or somthing and have another cheap peice of crap to run the dog around in.

Focus is a good bet - But try and get the TDCi if you can although the 1.6 Zetec is pretty good too.

Astra only got good at the mk5 but you can get some late mk4s with the CDTi engine (DTI is crap). The 1.8 is okay too.

Mk4 Golf estate can be had with 130bhp TDI engine - Worth a go but the petrol engined ones are pretty cack too.

Should all be in budget more or less.

passat tdi 2001 on lot of car and cheap as chipsive been looking and the passat is way cheaper than golf of same year, there only slightly bigger than a golf and a foot shorter than my 406 as i parked mine next to the old chaps passat estate 55 mpg and if it floats your boat will tow a 1700kg caravan as well lol

You get more car for the money with the Mondeo, my brother has a 130 bhp one and it shifts quite well. Dont really rate the Golf estate, right podgy roly poly thing, nearly had one when the mother in law was considering changing, glad I didnt, especially as it was 100 bhp diesel auto, ok round town but rubbish anywhere else, the Ford's are fun to drive with pretty much any engine, the VW's need plenty of power to take your mind off the rubbish handling, someone will mention the sports suspension, yeah whatever, make that rubbish handling and crap ride.

You are right - The Mk4 Golf and Bora do handle very badly.

They just last well and are generally reliable.

I'm still leaning toward the focus just because i hate the idea of having to drive an estate at 24 lol. just got back from having the scoob mot'd and i just don't think i can bring myself to sell it. The tester said it's one of the best looking imprezas for it's age he's ever seen (like new underneath). i might just try and get the dog in the passanger foot well and put some seat covers on. give it a goog valet befor i come to sell it and i'd be ok i think.

What sort of dog?

Ours (a fast growing 5 month old lab) sits in the back usually (estate) but in the footwell when I'm going surfing, which is often (board then goes in the back).

Same mate! 18 month lab. i'm gonna try and get him in the footwell tomorrow with the seat right back and see how we get on. The park is only 10 min away so he should be ok. guess i'm just a bit worried about the dog smell staying in the car and causeing an undue drop in price when i come to sell.

Got an S4 Avant for my Lab - although he's not yet old enough to drive it (;) )
Came with a "Dog 'n' Log" tray - perfect for keeping the messy b@stard in check :D

Keep a scabby old towel in the boot and give him a quick dry before he gets in. Makes a big difference and dog hair can always be removed.
Going to be a lot cheaper than buying another car!

My father in law used to tote a pair of gun dogs in his grand new 7 series, rear seats were fooked despite covering them.

sold our MY00 uk turbo because of our dog, :( wife liked the look of the focus estate so we ended up with a 2001 1.6zetec, cheap to run about in , cheap tax, cheap insurance and plenty of room for the dog. If your not after a fast replacement the focus gets a thumbs up as a sensible(did I say the S word)choice. Was looking at foresters before the focus but decided it would be better to have a car for the family and dog and then eventualy get a car for fun/enjoyment alongside the focus.
