Air filter sounding like a hoover?!?

Hi all. I have a 1997 non-turbo 2ltr rx and recently bought a sports filter. Managed to fit it tonight in the hope I would get a better sound from the engine. Instead it sounds like a vacuum cleaner!!! Have I done something wrong? Dont remember other Imprezas sounding like a mobile hoover! :p

Thanks in advance. :D

air filter

i doubt you done something wrong it is just normal engine induction sound that is normally not noticed with standard air box

the reason other impreza's sounded different could be that they were turbo models and induction sound is a lot different on turbo cars

ive a hks mushroom on my 93 wrx. at idle it makes a hollow humming sound but its just the air being sucked in an heard through the engine.

can you post up a sound sample?

The induction noise on my new WRX sounds totally different to my previous wagon, a lot more high pitched and whiney like a vacum cleaner. I prefered the note from the cone filter on my wagon so I may swap them over. The filter on the wagon is much bigger. The wagon filter also has a stainless pipe from MAF to turbo hose. On the WRX there is a black box so this may have something to do with the difference in noise.

Hi again.

Apparently it was because its a cheaper filter. Didn't by for an example K&N. Doh! :D
