AMEX cards
Anybody know of any advantages or disadvantages of using AMEX - I seem to remember that a lot of places dont take AMEX cards but could be wrong ??
The wife and I want to take out an AMEX card with an airline in order to get buy one get one free tickets. Thanks |
A lot of places that do take Amex try and dissuade you from using them in their establishments - I think Amex charge more per transaction than the other card types. In the main they're accepted pretty widely though.

I have a american express card which I got for the cash back on purchases.
I no longer use it as I buy alot of stuff online and I kept getting problems when using (the sites didn't accept it). Also the missus kept complaining all the shops she goes to don't accept it and she can't cope with 2 different credit cards, so we no longer use it. The big names accept the card it's the local/independant shops that don't. I think there are threads on the moneysavingexpert site that name the shops that accept it. |

My company's corporate card is AMEX and it's pain as not everywhere takes it! Mind you, it's better than our last card (Diners) as hardly anyone took that!

Its pants, so many places wont accept them. Get a Visa card or similar.

Retailers don't like them 'cos they charge too much. They used to charge an annual fee? I used one when travelling as **** hotels in the middle of nowhere used to take Amex. Worth it for a free ticket I guess (then give it back :D )

They do charge more but they give the most cash back. I have a couple of Credit cards - if they don't take Amex then I use Mastercard - Morgan Stanley do a cashback Mastercard as well :D

Is it the British Airways amex by any chance?
I have the premium plus one as I'm a very regular flier on BA. Works well and racks up the miles very quickly- and as you mention the 2-4-1 voucher is worth a lot of cash. It's my preferred card and I try and use it all the time. 99% of places in the US take it, but its a pain over here sometimes when its not accepted. Smaller retailers are usually the ones that don't accept it.never have a problem with petrol stations though! If is IS the BA one, then it is worth it for the flight/baggage/delay insurance alone if you fly regularly- the annual fee is £120, or £30 (i think) if you already have an amex. Don't bother with the blue one- take out the black one instead. Better benefits, miles rates and lower 2-4-1 threshold The only thing I regret about mine is not taking it out earlier! Have found their customer service to be exceptional as well. Oh- be aware, that the 2-4-1 only works on a booking with miles and not paid a for booking.... so you need a fair chunk of them in order to get the original flight. Combine the amex with a tescos clubcard and watch the miles rocket ;) If its not the BA one, then ignore my rabbiting :lol1: |
