My Wireless problem
 

Right, as there seem to be some very helpful people that know there stuff about wireless connections, I thought I give it a try.

Got my router jan last year (tried for ages to set up, gave up). Its a Linksys Home Wireless-G Router, model HR200 Linksys.com – Support/Technical Support/Downloads
I'm with NTL, and want to avoid calling them at all costs (my last 4 hour call to them put me off a bit).
To make matters to worse, I lost the installation CD, but it didn't help when I had it.

Ok, what I want to do is, emit a wireless signal, so I can go online with my other wireless devices. My NTL modem is a cable one, and it only has two outlets (ethernet and USB). I use the Ethernet, because thats what I prefer. The Linksys router has two outlets, one labelled Internet the other Ethernet. An ethernet cable fits in both.
I won't bore you any longer with what I done to get it not to work, I just hope someone can give me an easy way to set it up.
Any help much appreciated.

I've tried:

Ethernet from modem to Wireless router in internet, wireless router Ethernet to PC.
Ethernet from modem to Ethernet on wireless router, wirless router internet to PC.

It just loses my lan connection on my pc. Isn't there a more techincal changin ip addresses way of doing it? I've got an ip address and username/password on the bottom of the router.

Right, you need one ethernet cable going from Modem to Router into the Internet or WAN port and one ethernet going to PC from one of the other ports LAN.

The modem will need rebooting before the internet will work.

If it doesnt work straigh away see if there is a reset on the modem, like a pin hole,

thanks for the help. Didn't work though. Router has a reset switch, and I rebooted that and the modem, its giving me a message about little or no connectivity.

Means your PC cant get an IP address from the router

Ignore the modem for now.

Plug the Router into the PC and load up the router config pages

open explorer

type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 or whatever your router address is

Oh and NTL will NOT support you on this, its a third party router!!

PC Help line will but its £1 a min.

I'm BY technical Support and NTL and BY are now as one, so any network info you need I am more than happy to try and help and I'm sure there are a few people here if you get stuck understanding me :p

Things I do, when setting up new wifi network

Get internet via ethernet connection (if that don't work, you're screwed)

Get internet via vanilla wifi (no security etc)

Write all the settings (wep, network name, new admin password etc) in notepad file, then copy and paste from here to wifi client and onto router config page (probably via ip address and internet explorer)

All of this is done next to the router
If you have a laptop, you can do a quick walk around to see if you have any dead spots

If wifi works fine next to the router, but not in spare room etc, probably down to signal strength, usually amber or red systray icon.

Poor signal strength could be due to obstructions (walls etc) interference (DECT phones, other wifi networks) distance (router placement can help)

You can then upgrade firmware/client software once you have a stable network (make backup first, in case the upgrade screws the connection)

Some reports from a Google search say the hr200 is a bit low on signal oomph though.

I noticed the signal strength wasn't 100% on my PSP, whent they were side by side.

You will need to reboot your modem once you plug in the router.

Right, got the router settings window up. But still doesn't work.
At first it was setup for a Static IP connection type. So I tried Automatic Config - DHCP. But I'm still noen the wiser. Been re-booting evertime I've done something.
Any ideas?

Right plug the modem into the router and the router into the PC

Make sure all settings are obtain automatically or Dynamically

Then reboot modem, then router once modem is back online, then PC

If you can get to router config, you have a router issue

Check.

By asking for Automatic Config - DHCP? It leaves some things blank:
Host name and Domain Name. Sounds stupid, but is this ntlworld.com homepage

Can do that, been doing it each time.

Is router config, the setup, by entering the routers IP address? If so, thats what I'm doing.

HAVE NOTHING on the router, its all automatic

so dont change anything, or make everthing blank?
the local ip address and subnet mask were already entered.

Your router is NOT logging onto anything, the modem is!

All settings must be blank or allow the router to get automatically!!

These routers I think need a static IP for wireless, not sure about hardwire

Yeah that looks right

But this stopped my internet on my pc from working, before I have even got to the wireless part. Its says I have little or no connectivity, and althought the "Local Area Connection: A network cable has been unplugged", goes when its in this set up. It dont work.
Maybe I should just put the router away again, for another year.

re-booted the computer again, now working.
